What is the best jalopworthy eco vehicle? I expect at least one person to answer vw tdi wagon, and one person to answer miata... But what other vehicles out there are worth mentioning? Bonus points for being "greener" then a prius.

Personally, I want to save an old CRX, spend wayyyy too much money on it and end up swapping in a modern 2.0 Honda engine, kept to stock power/couple fuel economy friendly mods like intake/exhaust. And make the rest Singer level of attention to detail

What's most enviro-friendly really depends what you want to do with it. Generally, though, the best are smallish, slowish diesel hatchbacks - basically, the most common cars in Europe. There are dozens of models available with better fuel economy than a Prius.

If you do a lot of city miles and very little out-of-town driving, you're better off with a small petrol-engined car instead of a diesel. If you do enough motorway miles, the weight becomes less of an issue and aerodynamics more, so the small hatchback shape loses out to cars styled more like saloons/sedans.

But the most eco-friendly, most Jalop vehicle is a ute with a wood gasifier in the back.

If you're going to go green, you might as well do it in a carbon fiber diesel hybrid space ship for the road: it gets 261MPG and looks awesome doing it.

I am guessing this. Better than prius fuel. 3 cylinder motors are naturally balanced like inline 6's and v12's. Also one of the most aero dynamic cars ever produced. And add lightness at less that 1,900lbs.

The only emissions are smiles. I can never remember being small enough to fit in one of these, my memory only goes back far enough to when I wish I could fit in one.

Theoretically? Any car that uses as little oil as possible, made primarily of Iron, with as little steel as possible with no aluminum or plastic. Basically, an inline-four Jeep CJ. That would be the best car for the environment, hands-down.

Kinja'd!!!

Although, even more eco-friendly, would be an older car that doesn't use a battery or alternator/generator, but was crank-started. So if you get a CJ-5 and convert it to a hand-crank start, ditch the batteries and electronics, you'll have the best eco-mobile.

No matter what other car you pick, manufacturing emissions + long-term plastics recycling damage + battery packs + wiring will certainly override any (relatively small) decrease in emissions or mpg.

Arguably, since carbon fiber biodegrades better than aluminum, a CCX is way better for the environment than a Prius.

What's with all the Insight love lately? It's barely better than a Prius, apart from not having sold enough to have a huge holier-than-thou fan club - and spats. OK, and it was small and light, like an economy car should be. But other than that?

1990-1994 Hyundai Excel 3DR. I had the one with the 1.6L 4-banger and the 5-speed manual. Not only was it an absolute hoot to hoon, but it averaged about 45mpg combined and was incredibly easy to park as well as being surprisingly roomy.

It was also nigh-upon-unkillable, mechanically.

Fuck I miss that car...

The world thanks you! My great Aunt had a nice pristine 67 Camaro that really only saw duty driving to the store once a week, I can't remember what trim it was but I know it got traded in for a 1992 Geo Metro. . . That was sad, I was only 7 so I couldn't do anything about it. It was sad. . .

Or the SLS AMG Electric Drive? It is the most powerful SLS after all...

I don't know why some people nominated supercars for a question about "jalopy eco car". My realistic nomination would be Honda Civic VX from the 90's. It has 5l/100km average. It's not as "green" as a Prius, but it's cheaper to own.

Maybe not the most eco-friendly, but hear me out. My candidate is the Jaguar XJS V12.

The environmental cost of producing a vehicle is enormous. Depending on the distance a vehicle travels, and its economy, it may even outweigh the total fuel cost of the vehicle itself.

The trouble with cars like the XJS, especially the V12 ones, is that people don't usually manage to take them very far. Thus, you don't get much distance for that initial investment of resources. However, the further you take it, the more efficient it gets.

There will, of course, be a crossover where the terrible fuel efficiency of the V12 will outweigh the cost of production relative to a new, more fuel efficient vehicle. However, I'd be willing to bet that that's well past 200,ooo miles.

Kinja'd!!!

And since I love red cars, here's an atypical choice:

Kinja'd!!!

The 1999-2000 Ford ZX2 S/R. It had some neat performance parts that improved its already peppy handling and responsive, torquey powerplant. You can sub $5k examples all day. I drove a base model for 6 years and knew of numerous owners getting 40+ mpg and low 15s in the quarter mile. Not bad.
