Anything at all. Your choice. Car? Truck? What's the most Alaska way to get around?
Why do I ask, you say? Because I'm tired of hearing that the best-selling vehicle for nearly every state is the Ford F-Series. I'm more interested in what the best vehicle for the state should be.
Also, if you think the best vehicle for Alaska happens to be the F-Series, then by all means put it down. And as always...

Land Rover Discovery, heated seats, heated windows and throttle body heater make it perfect for those long cold winters. And you don't have to worry about roads as much.

When I got into University of Alaska, my first acceptance, I was so excited I had this fantasy of how I'd beg my dad to get me a GL to drive there because you know, snow, rocks, wilderness, freedom, America. But luckily, common sense came to save the day.

hey man i'm 6 years removed from college. Had to write a lot of papers...been in your seat before.
trying to help you out...go to somewhere with no wifi...start writing down ideas. dont try and write the paper. Write 1-3 sentences stream of conscientious about an idea related to paper topic.
when you get to 10, then go get facts or examples to back up each idea should be pretty much done then
include some counter point analysis and write you conclusion then your intro and youre done.

Anything with 4wd, decent ground clearance, and a block warmer. Take your pick.

My Brother lives in AK and drives a 99 Jeep Cherokee (auto unfortunately, but probably better up there). Seems to be a perfect car for the area, he wants to upgrade to a Ram 1500 though.

I drive these in Alaska.
They're perfect. The VW is awesome because it's so damn roomy, and in AK you always have a bunch of gear to haul around. It doesn't matter that the max speed is about 40 mph, because you're never in a hurry to get anywhere.
There isn't a lot of off-roading, because everything is forest, but if you need to cruise down a beach, or pull a tree down, or tow a boat, you need to have a truck. And the Bronco is perfect. Personally, I stay way the fuck away from Alaska during the winter, but if you brave it, you need that 4wd.
Also, they're both easy to work on, which is crazy essential. Unless you're in Anchorage or Juneau, parts are going to be both expensive and tough to find. I used to have a '49 Willys pickup, and you have not known frustration until you have tried to get a part that hasn't been made for 50 years to a town accessible only by boat or plane in under a week for less than a grand.

And here I was going to suggest that I already drive the perfect car for Alaska, a 96 Cherokee with the 5 speed.

I think a 96 Cherokee with a 5 speed is the perfect car for anywhere. I have been perusing the usual sites for an XJ with a 5 speed on and off for a while. Hopefully one day soon I'll find one that isn't too rough.

Good luck! It took me a bit of searching, and had to drive about 150 miles to get it but I found a rust-free one with a lot of updates/replaced parts with 159,000 miles for $3900.

If I were to live in Al*cough Yukon*a I'd rock this
as my DD nice ground clearance, block heater, 4x4, reliable as heck, decent fuel economy, plenty of aftermarket support / customization, and very capable for its size

As someone who grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska (and even went back there for grad school), I can tell you the answer is this: an AWD Subaru. Partial to the Forester myself, but my family has had nearly every model over the years with equal success.
One of the best AWD on the market, enough ground clearance to get over poorly plowed roads and snow drifts, the low slung boxer engine leaves you with a low center of gravity on black ice, and decent mileage compared to a truck.
I've owned subarus that have been left untouched at -50 below over a long weekend outside and uncovered. After getting all the snow off it, it still started on the first try. You don't find that sort of bullet proof cold weather performance in a lot of cars.

I'd give it a bit more ground clearance but other then that this.
