So my dad has this challenge for me that if I can ever come up with a justifiable argument to get a car in college (budget around $30,000 since he doesn't expect me to be successful) and like the stereotypical cars Sienna, Odyssey (I'm out of state, so utility over cool-ness for now) are already on the possible list for when my second year of college comes around and we might actually get another car for me. But with the article that was just posted onto the front page, a 13 year old Bentley is also around the price range but I can't think of a reason to get it other than the fact it's a Bentley and it's kind of ridiculous LOL

So...your dad's gonna buy you a $30k car if you win an argument with him? And it could end up being this thing???
Life. Is. So. Fucking. UNFAIR

I wish my dad could buy me a car with a budget around $30,000, I'd be getting a freakin' pristine s2000.

My dad would disown me before there would ever be any possibility that I'd get this. HAHAH. And he says the budget is $30k because that's only if I get straight As and that 30k will probably be going towards my graduation car present which would be pushed up 2 years if I get 4 semesters of straight As.
EDIT: And it's not more winning an argument but more like a formal proposal for why this purchase makes sense and is justified whether it be something that'll be sold after I go back studying in-state or it'll be kept for 10 years. This car wouldn't make sense in any scenario.

You'll pay more than that in service and maintenance charges in the first year. But you should do it!

Learning isn't that tough though, and it using a manual really isn't that difficult. I can barley walk and chew gum at the same time, but I can still shift well. Also, If you learn, it makes you cool

My dad says stick shift just means higher insurance and he watched me completely fail at shifting my TLs automatic manually, so I don't think that's happening any time soon.

Like this Bentley is just cause I wanted to see if I can fit a decent Bentley under that budget, but really, if I was given $30,000, I'd buy an XLE Sienna or a Hybrid Camry. HAHAHAH.

I work with a guy with a variant on this car. You could easily run up $15-20k/year on maintenance costs alone even assuming nothing serious breaks.
Remember that the maintenance costs on vehicles depends on the original cost of the car, not how much you can buy one for now after depreciation.

It's an awesome car, but maintenance is going to cost an arm, a leg and probably your favorite kidney. Also, it's a huge vehicle, and driving around a land yacht in college is probably going to develop scratches, either from bad drivers or angry people with keys. Plus, I doubt that interior would be spill/bodily fluid resistant

I'm not going to completely hate because my mom bought the car I'm currently driving (granted with a 10k price cap). But why would you be looking at minivans because you're out of state? You don't need that much space … unless I missed something.

You can call me stupid but..
I always want an arnage. I would gladly to sold my CLS for that.
In my country used CLS550 could fetch somewhere arround 80k. The bentley tough, 160-200k.
But i allowed to import that, altough maybe i'll end up paying 90k for that . Tax in here is stupid :(

I have no idea why I picked those two so far, but it's because I just love minivans for some reason. They're so roomy and useful and I can put a ton of stuff in them. A used Subaru Outback was on the final list on my final attempt to get a car in my first year but that never happened. There's a Fiat 500 on campus that's out of state and I don't even understand that.

Concur with antoni908. Is your Dad just going to give you a lump of money or is he going to buy it? If he gives you the money buy something cheaper and keep monies.

Your winning argument:
While it would be nice if every resource required for success in college were within walking distance, it's not reality. Not even close. Public transportation (if it's available around town) is also generally not a viable option for a lifestyle dependent on tight class schedules, study sessions, and other time sensitive events.
Having a vehicle while in college is a way to increase fruitful activities and, at the same time, stay on task with all of the other numerous commitments that top students keep. Which is more time effective: spending an hour OR MORE waiting on a ride or for a bus to get to and from an off-campus study group/meeting with an alum mentor/work at a part time internship, or spending a quick 10-15 minutes one way driving your own car and not worrying about being late to class?
Independent travel arrangements, while technically optional for anyone, is mandatory for anyone looking to get ahead and keep a frantic schedule. Unless you are going to go to school someplace with a severe lack of parking and world class subway system (NYC), there is only upside in having a vehicle.
I rest my case, Your Honor.

He'll probably buy it. But honestly, I might just end up asking my parents for a hand-me-down from what we drive now, which then will either be a 14 year old GX or a 10 year old LS. My dad's dream car is a 911 and he's helping me pay for college right now so any money I can save from wanting a car and money I get from my first job should help him get his dream car first.

Not only that, but if you roll up to your Basket Weaving 101 course in a Bentley, people will assume you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth. "Dude," they'd say, "chauffeur have the day off?"
Your fellow students may also target the car for reasons of class warfare, "Eat the rich!" they'd scream, as they key your car, spit on the door handles, and let the air of your tires.
Frat initiates may also target your car, assuming that its the Chancellor's, or the Dean's, or some other Figure of Authority. You'd come back to your car finding it wrapped in toilet paper, or spray painted with MAN LOVE RULES OK .

For a college car, hell to the no. It would be so incredibly awesome, but it's impossible to justify the maintenance costs, which will be nothing short of catastrophic. Get something you will be able to afford to run for a couple years once you graduate and that stream of sweet, sweet free money goes away.
Put the Arnage on the back burner and pick one up in ten years if you have a job that can support it.
In the meantime, don't get a minivan dude. With a car you can have fun on the street, with a truck you can have fun off road, with a minivan you can do neither. Especially if you have 30 grand to play with, get something you'll enjoy. I was an out-of-stater, and my e39 handled everything no problem. Get something you can take to car shows, or the drag strip, or whatever you have going on around you, and have some fun with. You'll be surprised how much crap you can fit in a sedan.
