At the Sotheby's RED auction, Bono's Range Rover, estimated value $100,000-$125,000, sold for $380,000.
A unique red edition of the unreleased Apple Mac Pro, probably a configuration that would be under $10,000 apart from the unique red color, sold for $800,000.
Sotheby's estimated value on the Mac Pro was $40,000-$60,000.

Good. Bono's a douche.

It was an auction....trying to make into a socio-economic statement doesn't really apply.

Say what you will, he's done more to help people less privileged than himself than everyone on this website combined for their entire lives.

Thank you, oh 1%-ers, your gobs of money are going to a good cause!

He's done some really great work with a lot of charitable organizations that have hysterically low amounts of distribution per donation, (RED) being a shining example.

Oh, Mac fanatics... Maybe they think it will give them a seance with the almighty St-v- J-bs.

I think you're confusing doing more with giving money and even in that category I can promise you that you're wrong.

Well I haven't done shit (broke student) and I don't presume that anyone here has done much, so yes my statement is a bit exaggerated. But my main point is that the guy is not a douche. Far from it. From what I've read, interviews, a bunch of other stuff, the guy is not your average get-rich-ruin-life rock star, he seems like a guy that actually gives a shit about other people.

It's a charity auction. Everything was wildly overpaid-for.
Also, it's not paint, it's anodized that color. ;^)

Well, I mean, apart from setting up U2's finances in tax havens so he doesn't have to pay taxes in Ireland...

It's not clear if this was a rich Mac fanatic, or a rich fan of Apple designer Jony Ive.
I think it highly unlikely the red Mac will actually get used. It'll probably sit in the original packaging, or else possibly in a glass display case. In 30-40 years it'll get auctioned off like a rare bit of Raymond Loewy industrial design.
Other items in the auction included:
a Star Wars Stormtrooper helmet signed by George Lucas (estimate $10,000-$15,000, sold for $245,000)
a Leica digital camera with an exterior designed by Jony Ive and Marc Newson (estimate: $500,000-$750,000, sold for $1.8 million)
an Ettore Bugatti Model T51 Racing Wheel (estimate $10,000 - $15,000, sold for $47,500)
a 1959 Fiat 600 Jolly (Estimate $100,000-$150,000, Sold for $485,000)
a 100" wide aluminum desk designed by Jony Ive and Marc Newson (Estimate: $300,000 - $500,000, Sold for $1.6 million)
a red and white Steinway grand piano customized by Jony Ive and Marc Newson (Estimate: $150,000 - $200,000, Sold for $1.9 million)

I'm glad he does that...paying taxes to Ireland does nothing to help anybody except the Irish government become richer. Less money for the government, more money for the charitable causes that he does spend quite a bit on.

Go ahead and take a look at this: http://www.bankrate.com/finance/taxes/… Not all 1%ers have 800 grand to spend on something like that. It's a common misperception.

Yea, but some of the ones who do, did, and I am grateful.
