You guys remember when my dad bought a 63 P1800 right? Well now that it's (somewhat) running and driving, it's soon time for an engine swap. I need your guys' opinions on what should power the Volvo. Here are the restrictions.
1. Has to be somewhat affordable
2. Not European
3. Not too modern
4. Reliable
5. Must have transmission with it
6. Must fit in a P1800 with no heavy modifications
7. Over 175hp (can be modified)
So far I've suggested an F20C, I5 from a newer Volvo and an M20 (European so maybe not)
What are your guys' suggestions?
EDIT: Forgot to mention: A Turbo Miata swap is likely as well.

Hum, I think the only thing that I would swap into one of these is either a turbocharged I4 from a 240 or the 4.4l Yamaha V8 from the XC90. Neither of those fit your parameters though.
Then again, I'm a bit of an engine swap prude. In-house is preferable.

Ford Duratec and associated 5-speed manual. I would suggest grabbing the drivetrain from the manual Ranger - it's strong enough stock, the trans bolts right to the motor, and the 2.3L duratec is a stout motor. If it's good enough for a Lotus 7, it's good enough for a P1800.

I5 is also European. I vote a Volvo or BMW motor.

Yeah, I was going to suggest this or the GM four-banger (Ecotec?). Simple and capable of lots of power - if you can find room for the tractor-sized turbo!

I think it would be pretty cool to put a liter bike engine in it. Seen it done a few times. not in a P1800, but a car none the less.
EDIT: I was gonna say that Hartley H1 V8 made from two Black 'Busa motors but it's 30k.
EDIT AGAIN: You would also have no reverse gear, because motorcycle engine.

Will a LS1 fit? I mean it's new, but not particularly too modern.
Northstar V8?

Honestly, swapping to a T-5 transmission will save you weight over the stock transmission by about 25 lbs or so. ultimately finding a B234ft engine (look for a 740 gle source) would yield big smiles for minimal fabrication work. Comes with forged crank, cast pistons. That would give you a stock 170hp on boost just to begin with but we all know what that engine could do given sa-weet lovins.
Or you could always just do a 5.0 mustang v8/t-5 swap.

Do a Volvo 16V Redblock swap, B230/B234 hybrid. It's whats in my 242 and it's sweet. Contact Cameron at IPD for info about the build, or just info about volvos in general.

Subaru EJ25 turbo. You can pick one up for 3000 bucks, and the roughly 260 whp at stage two will make this thing a rocket!

LS1 is always the right answer for an engine swap. Always. Seriously. Always.

I certainly like the idea of Volvo's 2.4l 170hp 5-cyl unit with a few mods, but as far as I know it only comes in transverse, so that might require some work...
If its period-correctness is of interest to you, a 3.9L Rover (read: buick) V8 could do.
Otherwise, I'd go nissan with either a RB25DE.
Quite like the M20 as well.

The modern T5 engine is great.. we love it our 2012 S60 and it should fit. Makes 250 HP, tubocharged, and great noise. Only thing is it would be an automatic though

Nothing uninteresting about a big, grunting Murican V8 that will fit in anything, has a huge aftermarket of affordable parts, and is as close to legitimately reliable as you can get with a performance engine.

A rotary P1800 would be incredible. 13B anyone?
Otherwise, the 4AG would be a nice, smooth engine. ITBs with the SC'd GZE would make great power and mean an incredible noise and power delivery. I prefer engine swaps to stay in the family, so a 5 cylinder as previously mentioned or 2.5 B525 I6 would be nice (and cheap, but there are more powerful ones that are rarer and pricier).

My dad wants to do a Ford 289 swap to his ES, I keep trying to persuade him on a RB25DE or a 2JZ-GE. Not my car so it's ultimately up to him.
