I'm sure some people are familiar with these guys. They tend to come out with some pretty fun car-based lists. This one's why FWD isn't so awful.

FWD and AWD apparently are the way to go here in the snow, as the average driver is pretty much useless with RWD.

It's safe to assume most or all of us are not average drivers.

Living in Minnesota, FWD is invaluable to me (as opposed to RWD).

The secret to snow is snow-tires. Snow-tires+RWD=pretend you are an old school rally driver. Snow-tires+fwd or awd= something you would feel comfortable letting your mom, younger sibling, non-car-person spouse drive around in.

Agreed. It's like the manual/auto thing all over again.

Yes RWD is preferable, but people seem to get hold of the idea and go all-out with it.

Drift? wtf that is a wet road, drifting involves a dry surface with tire smoke. that is the whole point of it. That is hydroplaning.

A lot of people can't afford a set of snow tires and wheels, or don't want the hassle of changing them every fall and spring.

ten reasons to hate fwd cars, a list made by me in under a minute

1. can't do standing 180

2. sucks to change a clutch

3. usually matched to a four banger

4. inherently can't handle more than 300 hp

5. inherently suck at taking turns (center of gravity all wrong when rotating)

6. understeer is never fun, unlike oversteer

7. suck at launches because weight shift is all wrong as well

8. fwd is popular only because user friendly for your average a to b commuter and for economy, two very lame reasons.

9. they all look the same

10. nature actually likes rwd better

The simple fact of the matter is that FWD is far safer for the average person as a DD, and much better in the snow and other adverse conditions. The only drive train that's safer under the same circumstances is AWD, which kills fuel economy, adds weight, is even worse to change a clutch on, and adds cost. Performance wise , yes, RWD is better in every respect to FWD, I will not argue that, and I have no desire to. If I could have it my way, I would DD a RWD car and I would have a set of snow tires and wheels for the winter. Alas, I can't afford either. All the good RWD cars (not used) are expensive (anything over $20,000 is expensive). And I -have- to have more power than a Miata. Anything under 260 HP is a downgrade unless it weighs significantly less than my current car.

mustang, f body camaro, charger, 350z. I'd even go as far as to recommend the genesis coupe. Those cars can all be had for around 15 grand or less. Winter tires are no excuse, a used set on rims with a couple of seasons left in em sell for 300-500 dollars. Unless you live anywhere else other than north america, then have my pity as oppose to my suggestions.

Also, fwd being safe as a DD in winter? What does that mean? Most of the time you're just driving in straight lines while DD. The only time rwd is unsafe is while turning at speed, someone accelerates a little too much. That only happens on offramps so just be careful and that's it! It literally doesn't enter the equation any other time while DD.

I understand what you are saying but seriously this sounds like a first world problem. Tire Rack (not to name drop) offers good deals. Seriously hassle? It takes half an hour at most to swap wheels. You only wear down each set of tiers while they are on the vehicle, it's a small investment, a few hundred, even compared to a 3000 dollar used car. I for one love the feeling of being able to get around in a RWD car better than an AWD on all seasons.

I don't want a used car. I've driven plenty of used cars and I can never shake the feeling that I have to drive it gingerly, lest I break something because it's old. Besides, an F-body Camaro is a heavy car made like shit inside. It depends on what model year Mustang you're talking about, but anything pre 2005 (not counting 60's and early 70's) is completely undesirable as well.

Then learn to fix em. Besides, cars don't break down unless you're an idiot. Keep the oil topped off, let the engine warm up, don't downshift into second while going 100 mph and all cars last until 200000 miles before anything major can happen. I bought a 07 mustang gt, summer driven, for 14 grand with less than 40K on the clock. It's like new. The worst thing that'll break on a modern v8 is accessories and clutches, both of which are easy and cheap to fix.

Fixing a car by myself is not an option. I'm currently preparing for medical school on top of a job, and I have neither the budget nor the time to spend on a car that's going to break. And things do break. Struts go bad, master cylinders go bad, swaybar linkages break, timing belts need replacing, water pumps go bad, thermostats go bad, valves need adjusting, etc etc. Parts wear out no matter what you do. You can't stop everything from breaking or wearing out with "an oil change and driving it right." My current car is at 105K and it's been well taken care of, and it's starting to want more of my money.

I work 7 days a week and am currently preparing for med school as well. You obviously don't want it as much as I do. Also most of those maintenance things you mentioned are easily doable or you shouldn't worry about them for at least another 75K.
