Toyota should start producing the 86 at it's own factories, so it can build the convertible, sedan and more powerful versions, and leave Subaru build the BRZ and the BRZ wagon and STI versions at Gunma. That's the best way to exploit the platform. And Toyota will need that capacity, as it plans two more sports cars.

Kinja'd!!!

Having Toyota and Subaru publically arguing, is silly.

Does it make sense to split production on a low production car? And are Toyota's rumoured sports cars even using the same platform that it would make sense for them?

What's to stop either Subaru or Toyota from making their own unique versions on the same line? The BRZ is already different from the FRS, beyond fog lights.

Read the article, Subaru is against the convertible(and likely the sedan), and as it is their plant, if they are against it, it won't be done.

Splitting production would allow both cars, to expand and evolve, becoming direction setters for whole brands and resulting in different cars, when the second generations arrive.

As for the other Toyota sports cars, the smaller one will make extensive use of existing parts(including 86 parts, I guess), having a plant specialized in sports cars, would be a great asset for Toyota, as it aims to become a company focused on driving dynamics, under Akio Toyoda's leadership.

IF they did, could they put an engine in it that would perhaps propel the vehicle past 60 in 5.2 or faster?!

(Yes, I know fanbois get mad when I mention this crap, but it bugs me. It corners great. I get it. Now can we work on forward performance?)

Ah, guess I missed seeing it.

What he says makes a ton of sense. The Corvette, for instance, was designed to not need a roof structurally, which makes sense because who would want the removable targa panel providing any sort of lateral, longitudinal, or torsional support. And which is why the drop top Vette doesn't really add weight or feel looser/ less rigid. Conversely also why a lot of convertibles suffer those problems, which is what would happen with the BRZ/FRS rag top.

If Toyota wants it done, it will likely get done. If Toyota pulls the FRS/86 out from Subaru's hands, I can't see it making sense financially for the BRZ to exist on it's own assembly line with Subaru footing the full bill.

If they make enough versions, it won't be a problem, also since it is a halo car, bringing giant profits, it's not BRZ's job.

I think you have a valid point. Since no one has really stepped up to challenge to twins (unless I have missed it, which is entirely possible), let them fight it out over a couple generations. That could get very interesting.

That being said, I have only seen one BRZ in person. I have seen the FRS fairly often. Is this only a local/regional trend? Is it reversed or equal where anyone else lives? Don't know if sales could potentially affect development costs or more power and multiple platforms but surely it's a factor.
