Fox's new sci-fi take on a cop show is set 35 years in the future, in 2048. There are many "futuristic" aspects to the show such as android police officers, bad-guy tech, etc. But what do the police drive? Current body-style Ford Fusions with different wheels:
How many police units do you know that are currently driving around in 1978 cars? Even the very opening scene of the movie, set 2 years prior in 2046, has the main character ducking behind a cop car... and what car is it? A 96-99 Taurus & Sable...
DNA Bombs? No problem. Sex bots? Yes please. 40 year old cop cars still in service? You lost me.

Yeah seriously. How does a futuristic sci-fi show expect to be taken seriously using current-day midsized ford sedans painted flat black as police cars?

Yes Robocop came to mind, but it was set in the "near future" with no specific date reference. With the low-tech nature of Robocop, it could have easily been set within 10 years of the release date, making it much more plausible.

Also, Robocop was set in Detroit which was (and is) broke. If the Police Force can afford to build androids, they may be able to afford new cars.

I'm actually right there with you.
The series does such an excellent job of immersing you, the viewer, in this science fiction future world only to slap you right back out of it the moment a car is seen on scene.
Okay, so I get it - this show isn't targeted at car guys like us. It's targeted at Sci-Fi and Karl Urban fans. Okay, so I get it - every television show and movie has a budget and custom cars aren't cheap. I get these things but just the same...
... every time the scene changes to an in-car or near-car shot, I have to look away because my suspension of disbelief only extends up to the point that these cops are driving around in Robocopcars.
But hey, look at it this way; at least you're not a fashion buff, or into firearms, or even a techno-wizard. Why? Because Almost Human falls flat in terms of fashion, tech and weapons, too. If you're an aficionado of any one of these elements (or all, god forbid) you're going to have a very hard time, at times, when the future is really just the past (today's present) dressed up to be tomorrow.
The clothes, they fail the show from time to time because, apparently, fashion sense has hardly even changed in 35 years. The guns, too, will disappoint anyone with a discerning eye given that all the 'future' weapons are based on existent frames, rails and receivers. But don't even get me started on the tech level which, really, seems to be about on par with modern smart-tablets... only holographic.
It's a good show but it's struggling to overcome all the classic problems associated with futuristic sci-fi television programming and hopefully it'll get more then one season to work it all out, hopefully it won't get cancelled just as it's getting good... I'm looking at you Terra Nova .

To be fair, I see LOTS of cop cars from ancient history.

and here I was.. thinking i'm the only person who was bothered by this! Spot on article! I actually forgive them because it's a TV show and not a blockbuster movie.. but they really didn't even try to make the cars look somewhat futuristic.. and wow the 96-99 Sables.. EPIC FAIL. At least use a Crown Victoria to make is somewhat reasonable.

Ok not to be a robo dork but the city did not build robo cop intact due to non payment, the cops were striking, that's how well the city was doing! So robo cop was built by OCP you know the eventual bad guys in the "robo" series, front get me wrong their all crappy, futuristic or not!

The Dark Knight series touches on this concept. Bruce, you're a bajillionaire but look how craptastic the city you're protecting is. "i can't hear you over how awesome my multi million dollar hover plane-copter thing is. Nope, still can't hear you over my car tank motorcycle thing. Nope, still can't hear you over my sobs of not having parents"

There's really no way to answer this without calling out some corruption in government; this isn't Dem vs. Rep, it has more to do with the people deciding how to spend money being paid by the people they are spending money to...
Basically the plot of Robocop was of a corrupt city government wanting to privatize the city's police force for profit (sound familiar). One way they justified this was by under-equipping their police to fight the criminal element in the city (sound familiar). The private contractor, who heavily bribed the city government, uses the city's money to develop and build a cybernetic police force to sell back to the city (does any of this sound familiar?). In short, giving the police force 30+ year old, unreliable cars for patrols fits the theme pretty well. Making them Ford Taurus' is just cruel...
This pretty much describes the M.O. of nearly every government contractor I see nearly very day.
