Found this, 1993 525iT wagon. Maybe a blown headgasket, replaced transmission that is an Auto, Looks pretty clean except for a huge dent right behind the passenger rear door. Would you do it for $850 list price?

dual sunroof that works? Probably is a headgasket, mine was. That was a bear, had to rent the Vanos tools. I THINK 93 was first year of the M50 Vanos

It is the dual sunroof, Doesn't mention if it works. So getting "through" the VANOS is a pain? would a patient, moderately skilled garage mechanic (6.5 out of 10) with access to professional grade tools be able to do it?
My parents still have a farm and I have a workshop that is 40X80 with some sweet tools in it. Like cranes, and hydraulic presses. I know I could do it there, the only thing I know I wouldn't positively have is a VANOS tool and skill.

Do it!
I've been looking for a 5-series wagon for some time, and I've never seen one that cheap even ones with blown engines, cooling problems, etc...
I'd offer $600 cash and see if he takes it.

At that price it's hard to go wrong, particularly if you can haggle the seller down another fifty or hundred bucks - or more, if possible, because it'll need money spending to make it a good DD. Worst case scenario, it must be worth a fair chunk of that as scrap, though, so you can't lose too much.
Budget the same again for fixing it up, though. You can hope to be pleasantly surprised, but even just new BMW-quality tyres will set you back something like $100 per corner, minimum (assuming US prices are much the same as UK ones there). If you change out all the fluids - oil, tranny, brakes, power steering, etc - you're looking at at least another $100. Little bits and pieces like suspension or gear-linkage bushings don't cost much individually, but if you're going to do jobs like that you might as well replace everything involved while you're there, requiring lots of parts.
Even if there's nothing seriously wrong with the car, catching up on the deferred maintenance adds up fast relative to a cheap car. An extra hundred bucks for brake discs on a more expensive car doesn't seem so bad, but on a cheap car it makes a noticeable difference to the overall price.

there is a very finicky way to do it without the vanos tools, but I wouldnt trust it. It is a very drawn out job,. I think AllData pegs it at 14 hours, even with the tools you are looking at 20 if you dont do them day in and day out, plus time out to get the head decked if it isnt cracked. that sunroof is amazing if it works, but is a bitch to repair if it doesnt. Great cars if they are right, this one might be worth it for $500. I paid that for my 95 with the sport package and a blown hg

I saw another one that was $1350 but ratted out pretty hardcore. I shied away for finicky stuff that just didn't pass the smell test.

I know, the scrap weight is probably $400, I could get another couple hundred out of the seats and interior bits. and the engine transmission is probably another 200 parted out. It would basically be a break even point in a worst case scenario
Tires and parts are probably about the same here vs there. I was kind of budgeting around $1,400 for everything. I think when I got done I could probably sell it for $3000ish. But I may just decide to keep on improving and have a fun hoon-wagon.

That may be some long term plans. But I need some cash and knowledge before I attempt that.

I'd say it's one of the easiest engine swaps you can do. It already has a bunch of parts you need since it's got the M50B25, you will need that oil pan to clear the front subframe, but you already have it so woohoo! I would love to find something like this...

If you can part it out, you'll probably be able to make a profit. But who really wants to do that?
If you keep it, you'll not lose much money on the work done, but I doubt it's going up in value fast just yet. Not quite at that age. They've pretty much bottomed out, probably even started back up, but the curve won't get steep until they're a bit older.
