260 after tax at my dealership, not bad for being a BMW part, but I wouldn't spend my dollars on it... Then again I can't afford an F10 550i.

It does look really cool! And the price isn't that bad compared to some companies. If it was Ferrari it would be a couple grand.

Do you know if they make one for the DCT shifter? And do you think it's worth the risk to let my sister drive my E90 M3 for the next year when she comes to town to visit if she gets me the shifter for Xmas? She already takes it sometimes when I'm being nice. It kinda freaks me out cause she's not very knowledgeable about cars. But she's 31 and never caused an accident so she must be a decent driver...

Yes they do make one for the DCT knob but I believe it's for the E60 M5 only, but I have seen people use the E60 M5 illuminated knob in E9x M3's more than once so if you're handy you could pick one up from EAS and then throw it in your car. I believe it is 450 dollars though.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > E30Joe drives a Subaru

Ouch 450 bucks! I guess that's the M markup. That's too much to ask for as a present, even if it means 3-4 free weekends of using my car next year.

11/22/2013 at 15:52

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah I'm too nice. She doesn't drive stick so the 997 is out. And she's intimated by my description of how she would need to drive the E46 to make SMG smooth. When I told her that it's just like driving a stick except she needs to use the paddles her eyes went wide and I saw the fear on her face. It was classic.

Kinja'd!!! His Stigness > Manuél Ferrari
11/22/2013 at 16:14

Kinja'd!!!0

If she's a good driver than I understand. It's also nice that you're a nice brother, I'm kind of an ass because my siblings were not that nice to me, and still aren't great.

That's funny that she's intimidated by the E46. Why didn't you just put it in auto mode? I need to remember to try auto mode too btw.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > His Stigness
11/22/2013 at 16:39

Kinja'd!!!0

She's been nice and she's responsible. Hopefully she never wrecks it...

I did tell her about auto mode. But I also told her that even in auto mode it's best to remember that it's a manual transmission and to drive it like one. For the car to be smooth you need to think about how you apply the throttle in different situations. That's the thing I like about single clutch sequential transmissions. They are more involving than a DCT. With the DCT any non-gearhead can just put it in auto mode and go.

Kinja'd!!! His Stigness > Manuél Ferrari
11/22/2013 at 16:52

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah I do like that about a DCT. I think I'll be fine with the SMG in the M3 but if I didn't love the car I could see myself getting irritated because I'd have to think more as opposed to a manual where everything I do is done out of reflex. When I drove the M3 I had to think about my shifts and how I was applying the throttle, whereas in my Golf and your 911, I just shifted and didn't have to think about any of that. This is odd considering I've only been driving a manual for a year.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > His Stigness
11/22/2013 at 17:14

Kinja'd!!!0

It's only because you're not used to it yet. Once I got used to SMG driving it was no different than driving the 997. It becomes like any other manual, except without a clutch pedal.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > His Stigness
11/23/2013 at 04:30

Kinja'd!!!0

Haha dunno about that. I expense my details so cheap for me ;)

Plus you got a new job. The E46 will be yours soon

Kinja'd!!! His Stigness > Manuél Ferrari
11/23/2013 at 04:38

Kinja'd!!!0

But what's cheaper than free? lol. I do a very good job too, I only use the best products. And I can't think of any excuse because it's not like I need to test drive the car more, you and I both know I love it and want it.

Hopefully, I'm going to do everything I can do save for it. I'm actually planning on commuting back and forth on the train; I'll save money in gas and also in wear and tear. I figured it out and I'd be driving 15,000 miles a year and my $1,000 tires only last 10,000 miles, so I'll be saving approx $2,000 a year by not driving.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > His Stigness
11/23/2013 at 04:44

Kinja'd!!!0

You can make tires last more than 10,000 miles

Kinja'd!!! His Stigness > Manuél Ferrari
11/23/2013 at 05:25

Kinja'd!!!0

My tires are only guaranteed for 15,000 miles, there's no way to stretch them any further. And I've got more negative camber in the rear which increases wear. But that's the price I pay for performance. I don't mind the idea of taking the train because I don't have to deal with traffic and I'll get exercise riding my bike from my house to the train and from the train to the shop.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > His Stigness
11/23/2013 at 18:47

Kinja'd!!!0

Ah it's that negative camber and soft rubber that makes the tires go so quick.

I've been able to get crazy long tire life in the 997. But no mods and I only drive crazy sometimes. You drive crazy 100% of the time cause you are immune to prosecution

Kinja'd!!! His Stigness > Manuél Ferrari
11/23/2013 at 20:54

Kinja'd!!!0

Haha unfortunately I'm not immune to prosecution, just protected somewhat. But I do push the boundaries more often than not. And I do drive hard all the time, but it's only cause the car wants me to.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > His Stigness
11/24/2013 at 18:29

Kinja'd!!!0

No you drive hard all the time because you can. I would too if I had your special protections. Had I been driving when you decided to test the awesomeness of mashing the throttle in a DCT equipped M3 when the light went green I would have went to jail. The multiple police cruisers that pulled us over would have taken me to county jail immediately for exhibition of speed and going 65 in a 40. All I could have hoped for in that situation is that they let you drive my car home instead of impounding it and further increasing my costs.

Kinja'd!!! His Stigness > Manuél Ferrari

I don't really speed that much though. On the freeway I don't ever go above 80, I usually do 75. And on surface streets I don't usually go 10 over the limit. Driving your cars the way I did is a very rare thing, but I did go faster than is sensible. But the 0-60 run was kind of on accident, I forgot how fast it was to 60. And I don't know why I didn't get a ticket for that, I'm not sure if it was because of my mom or because I was respectful and I told him the truth. The reason I'm unsure is because the officer usually asks me who works for CHP, but the officer only yelled at me, he never mentioned my mom, so it will always be a mystery.

If you had been driving I know you would not have been arrested, they have no reason or cause to. They can only sight you for exhibition of speed, and speeding also, I think. But according to my understanding of the vehicle code that's it. The only time they can arrest you for exhibition of speed or speeding is anything over 100 mph, and even then there is room for error. The officer can choose to look the other way and write you for 90, or 99.

While my mom working for who she does does help me avoid tickets, the other part is how I deal with the officers: I always tell the truth, and I am always polite and address them as sir. But it's the truth thing that helps a lot. When I was pulled over by one of my mom's officers I told him exactly what I was doing and he later told my mom he appreciated my honesty and that alone would have gotten me out of ticket.

Telling the truth is definitely the right call. But I really think it helped that your Mom is CHP. I would have at minimum got a speeding ticket. You blasted off the line like a bat out of hell, haha

11/25/2013 at 03:03

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah I think that did help. It was crazy fun doing that though, it's insane how quick it was, and to imagine there's even quicker cars. I want to try a 911 Turbo S and see what 2.8 seconds feels like.

Kinja'd!!!0

If you tried launch control on the same spot in a Turbo S or GTR you'd go to jail for sure. Anaheim Hills is known for having super strict cops.

Cops in that area are super strict. I have only had one ticket from 2006 till now. It was 2 years ago in Anaheim Hills.

If you use launch control on a public Street at a light you're asking to be shot.

I think you may have accidentally activated it that night. So you should have been shot.

Launch control only takes aa little time off, but I did feel the wheels slip, which was awesome. But I was referring more towards cars that do 0-60 in under 4 seconds, with special attention paid to those under 3.

I wonder if the engine they used was the Cosworth engine. But those cars from that era are exceptionally well made and engineered, that's why I want it so bad. The w201 is a much better car than my w202.
