I'm not sad about it. Five months ago I sold someone a very nice Macbook Pro. We agreed on terms and he made one payment. He then refused to call me back, text or respond to my emails. He thought he was going to get a Core i7 with 8 gigs of RAM for $300.

However, to protect my investments, I kept my iCloud account active. Smart, eh? Smart. I sent the lock command yesterday. It locked today and not 5 minutes later I had, in my inbox, a rather self-serving email accusing me of hacking into the laptop and selling him a huge pile of shit that never worked. Said I can have the damned thing back and consider the only payment he made as rent.

LOL. I asked him what he expected, buying a laptop off of an IT guy. Did he actually think he'd get away with it? I don't really care. I'll have the laptop back, clean all his shit off it, make sure it's in good condition again and resell. Cash only this time.

You're lucky you're getting it back and he's not smashing it to pieces.

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

You weren't a dick. You had the right to do that.

But yeah that was a risky thing to accept a payment plan. When selling something to an untrusted random person you have to treat it like a drug sale and Biggie's 10 Crack Commandments ;)

That's destruction of property, a misdemeanor. I don't think he is quite that dumb.

When the deal was struck, we were working together and I honestly expected that to not change.

Suffice it to say, I know exactly which IT department he is going to take it to tomorrow, to see if they can unlock it. I also know exactly who that IT department is gonna call

The only thing worse is when you get screwed over by someone you were close with. When a friend, family member or someone you dated screws you it is a million times worse than a random person or ex coworker.

Not a dick. That was pretty good rent, though.

Well what is property theft then? Because that's what he's doing.

Beating him up would be acting like a dick. This isn't being a dick at all. He's trying to screw you over. If anything, i'd say you're being too nice to the guy.

I'm confused. If he didn't pay all at once why would you give him the laptop at all?

IT might be too late, but see if you can get the other guy to unlock it, "but it might take some work..." for another $300. Then lock it back up again, three or so hours later. You know he's gonna take it back to the guy that fixed it and demand he do it right this time. he calls you, you stroll in, he gives you half the 300 and the laptop, you both laugh and go get a beer!

Well, as far as payment plans go, usually the person paying gets to use the equipment while making the payment - a lot like a car loan. That's why I left my account on there, in order to disable the computer in case of nonpayment.

Rule number 1, don't fall for "payment plan" unless you are a bank or creditor. Person to person should always be in full. Whether it's a friend of yours or your own mom. It just avoids the hassle of non payment or having to ask about payment. "Hey where's my money", it just creates animosity.
