Haven't looked into this in a while but Pelican used to have a "refresh kit"

Shifter bushings. Pelican parts will probably have a kit. Not a bad time to upgrade, Turner Motorsport is also good for upgrade kits.

Buy a E46/E30 M3.
Though seriously, it's gotta be bushings.

I think i got a kit from pelican parts with the pins, bushings detent. I was doing the clutch on my 3 liter heater and since the trans was out I went ahead and did those as well. 5th had to be pressed in I believe, also reverse. Trans has to come down buddy

I just looked in the book, I could do it with the driveline in place, but doing this job in my driveway on my ramps ain't happening.

Just fixed mine. Pelican sells a kit for around $110- however a bunch of the expensive stuff they sell you is unnecessary. I paid around $60 for what I needed and another $90+25 for an SSK and shift carrier bushings from understeer since that included a few things I needed.
Pretty satisfied with it but you'll have to drop the trans. I did it while putting in a new clutch, though.
I didn't have any gear lean but shifting gears felt less like shifting and more like arm wrestling a burly Russian. Remember to get the $6 sponge thing from the dealer- I think that's the part that made the biggest difference for me.

I don't think BMW made E36 M-wagons. Seems to me it might be an S5X swapped car with M trim bits.

I don't have the facilities to do the work, but you don't have to drop the trans or drive shaft. It's just much more difficult to get to. I think I'm just going to live with it.

I think this is the the first e36 wagon I've ever really noticed. I have only searched for E30 Wagons and 5 series wagons.

No, not for all the bushings. But to be honest it might be easier and quicker to drop it- but by no means am I saying it's not time consuming either way.
If you do ever have to drop the trans though, I'd say it's more than worth it to refresh the shifter. Really tightened up the feel of my car.

Yeah, but I'm at the well I only paid $1,600 point now, so if the clutch goes or the tranny refuses to get into gear, I'll pay to get the job done, until then, I can live with it.

You don't have to drop the trans to get to all the bushing, but you will have to remove the trans mounts and tilt the motor to get to the ones on top of the transmission. The other ones are pretty easy and may make a big difference if you can jack up the car. Parts 7 and 10 may you should be able to change pretty easy. 2, 4 and 12 would be the tougher ones where you would need to start dissasembling things.

Incidentally, pretty much the only ones I replaced are 2, 4, and 12.

Really? 2 is especially difficult because of that "bitch" of a clip that holds it in. Rouge Engineering makes upgraded bushings for all of that. If you do the others I think you will see a big improvement. Those little plastic washer/bushings are cheap and easy to get to.

Yeah I had my trans down so I had easy enough access to that goddamn clip. I'd bought UUC delrin carrier bushings and they'd come with a replacement clip, so I just snapped the one on the car. To be honest I'm not sure how much of an improvement they made, though.
The bit the sponge fits into was free to wobble left and right. When I took it apart there was no trace of the sponge at all- terrible design. With the new sponge the wobble was pretty much completely eliminated.
But everyone's car has seen different circumstances. I only fixed the bushings that seemed bad on my car. Someone else's may be completely different.
