How the hell does a piston ring get unseated? (update from previous post about Audi voiding my warranty)

Hi Gang,

Some of you may remember my rant a couple days ago where I stated "HELP!! Audi wants to deny my powertrain warranty!!" Well, that actually did happen and my warranty is caput. My ignorance is to blame. No one else, but me. What can I say? My blood flows synthetic motor oil and I breathe through 6 polished aluminum velocity stacks. I had to try out the APR tune on my '12 A5 to see if I liked it because racecar.

Anyway, with the warranty voided and the local Audi shop telling me that I probably need a new motor, I go back to the garage that I initially got the tune done at. I have been scouring the inter-tubes about the similar problems that have befallen others and I think that my extremely uneducated guess at what has happened is that an injector stuck open, flooded the cylinder and unseated the piston ring. The reason that I think this is because there is NO compression on the bad cylinder and the "smoke test" ended with smoke coming out of the oil fill cap. The guys at the garage said that they have had 4 or 5 people come over from the Audi shop claiming that they have been told they need a new engine only to find that an injector caused the problem and can be easily remedied without replacing an engine.

So in short, I am being optimistic that I won't have to spend $5k + to replace an engine. Hence the positive image contained in this post.

How do you unseat a piston ring when it's held in place by the piston skirt and block? What codes is the car throwing? Test the injector - with FSI I don't think one will be stuck open and then continue working normally again.

Also (please correct me if I'm wrong) but wouldn't smoke coming out of the oil fill cap mean a valvestem seal is bad, or is there smoke coming out of the crankcase?

Hmmm an Audi with no warranty holding you back anymore. It sucks that they just stripped that away from you but now the possibilities are endless. I hope the repairs go smoothly. Do a huge burnout in front of the dealership for trying to extort some serious cash from you, stealerships are unacceptable.

That was my question exactly. How the hell is that even possible? Unfortunately, I do not know what codes were showing up. The only thing that I know is that they checked the coil pack and it was "fine" and they said that it wasn't the injector. But the thing is, they have said that a new engine is needed several times when it hasn't. I don't know how much I trust those guys over there...

As far as the smoke test resulting with smoke coming out of the oil fill hole, the only things that I could come up with were valve seal or something in the crank case. No idea. I just read that some people have had their rings "unseated" and that was it.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing!!! haha

I think that I am at least going to get them to put a high flow CAT on there and that APR stage 1 tune that got me into this mess in the first place. Downpipe is worthless to me because it doesn't add hardly any power and there is NOTHING that can make an Audi 2.0 sound good. Nothing.

Sounds more like a cracked piston or broken ring. I agree with Party-VI, It would be damn near impossible to unseat a ring

I'd go one further. Stick his ass cheeks up against the showroom windows and let rip with a loud one. (that leaves condensation marks on the glass) They'll be talking about him for months.

My advice, since the warranty is gone, take it to an independent shop and pay for an hours labor to get the codes read and ask the guy(s) or gal(s) what the problem is. I'm assuming it's driveable?

It is driveable and I am taking it to the same place that did the initial tune. I have been to them for other stuff and they always work on all the expensive imports and whatnot. They are going to give me some semblance of a deal because they feel kind of responsible for me losing the warranty. Nice people there...

They also specialize on the Audi and VW 2.0 motors, so my guess is that they will be able to get this wrapped up quickly.

AHA!! A broken ring makes WAY more sense than an unseated one. My engine only has 27,000 miles on it, so I would doubt that it would be that worn out. In thinking about this further, if the ring broke and then finally slid up under the other piece, it would leave a gigantic gap for air to escape from. That seems more plausible to me. At this point, I bet it is either valve or ring related. Dammit, I want to pull that sucker apart to see what the problem is!

I love people like you. you don't live outside your means and even though it's a new-ish car that is broken, you understand it was your fault and want to learn from it. I wish more people were like you and less people bitched about how life sucks.
