Whenever I go on the front page it seems like someone is defending a truly crap car.

People that defend cars like this are why GM and for the most part the big 3, got away with selling crap for soooo long. I'm just going to leave this here - "Asking the front wheels to steer a 3700lb sedan and put down 303bhp through an open differential is like asking Stephen Hawking to juggle burning chainsaws."

"Asking the front wheels to steer a 3700lb sedan and put down 303bhp through an open differential is like asking Stephen Hawking to juggle burning chainsaws."

Cringeworthy. People weren't asking the front wheels to do that, people were asking for it to be RWD.

Did you see the backlash of comments I got when I said the new mini cooper is underpowered?

People also weren't asking for a car to be built on a 20 year old platform

So there's that too

Seriously, they are great cruisers and good fun to point and squirt when you need a quick giggle. They're cheap to maintain and reasonably well built. I thought they were a touch expensive when new but you can get a fair amount of handling parts for the W-bodies and that engine has way more aftermarket than most cars these days.

Now if you only judge a car by how well it corners then you are going to be let down. If you want to swallow hundreds of miles of freeway with ease and lots of legroom? And be able to indulge your inner 10 year old at will? The monte carlo SS is a tough vehicle to beat for the price these days.

GM should've been barred from ever using the Monte Carlo name again as a condition of the bailout. Every car with that name was a piece of shit, dropping mufflers and transmissions all the time.

GM got away with crap because they usually did have good cupholders, which is the most important part of a car.

Or to be styled after a Jelly bean in a way that no one would be offended.

What I hate the most about this car though, is that I actually like the idea of a large Chevrolet sports coupé that isn't the Camaro, and Chevrolet failed at a Monte Carlo then kind of gave up, so fuck me right?

Yup. Now you may ask for my Jalop card, but I actually enjoyed the styling of the previous generation (2000-2005) Impala and Monte Carlo. What they did in 2006 was took a picture of an Accord, slapped some bowties all over it and handed it to the engineers.

Not at all man, I actually like that one's styling as well, you can kinda see the old Monte Carlos in there, on the bulbous headlights and along the line of the hood, it's just the underpinnings that blow.

Just nope.

Crap styling

Crap 2 decade old chassis

Crap tranny

Crap engine placement for its size

Crap interior …. just crap.

For the sake of argument, my SC400 had all of those qualities + RWD in 1992. same number of gears, oddly similar styling, better interior, more HP than the '05(?) supercharged one. Just no.

Not to mention they are around for under 5k all day, so that throws out your "tough vehicle to beat for the price these days" … come at me bro.

Agreed, though my personal favorite of the modern Impalas couldn't be any other than the 94 Caprice based SS

I'd own the shit out of this one if I lived in the US/could afford it, I just wish there was a 2 door version to go with it, as opposed to the Lumina 2 door that replaced old timey Monte Carlos on NASCAR.

W-body gen 2 would only be a few years old for the V8 SS models.

And you drove a toyota with more leather so prices for parts were more expensive. The typical buyer for either car would be taking it to a dealer for servicing so I'll bet money the monte carlo buyers had cheaper repairs.

The transmission is horrible so you just cruise around and pretend you don't have it

I think an LS motor sounds better than the JZ motors AND I thought the supra was a pile of wank with the SC a step up, but not by much. Plus it looks better than a supra ever could. I did like the SC's styling though. Shame the next gen looks like something I'd see in a film called "gelatinous monster from planet zarbon"

Oh and those 5k vehicles are going to be thrashed to all hell, falling apart at the seams, and just be a headache down the line in a hurry. Not even a toyota can survive two decades and still be 100% bulletproof. A lexus doubly so with the extra things to go wrong.

I don't know what the hell "gen 2" is but it has the same shitty engine mounts from every big GM car so IMO they didn't change much.

As for the SC you couldn't be more wrong. First off the 1UZ V8 sounds like a fucking dream, and I had mine for 2 years 189k - 210k miles and only 2 things broke the alternator and the water pump. AND I got it for $1,500. The 2nd gen Soarer was actually design/engineered to be a Lexus from the get go, it definitely wasn't a ES.

Not to mention you couldn't be wrong about the used SC market, spent 1 minute on Autotrader and found this '93 SC400 that looks minty as hell.

Kinja'd!!!

Gets your sauce(facts) right before you start talking that shhiiiit.

And just to drive the point home I did the same exhaust mods as this guy.

GM used the subaru strategy of "Don't fuck with what works" but gen 2 means generation 2. A lot of little parts and bits carried over since they are cheap and rugged however the chassis is a new design. The suspension was completely redone and the interior has a lot better layout and more room. My gen 1.5 monte carlo had massive pillars so visibility was impossible. My mom had one of the first gen 2 monte carlo SS models and it was loads easier to see out of and gave much better feeling of where the car was at.

For the record - 21k miles over two years is hardly a test of a vehicle's longevity. The alternator and water pump breaking are VERY FUCKING IMPORTANT so I count that as a fail. Plus you are a car enthusiast taking car of his own car. Do you really think most SC400 owners did if they weren't the first or second owner? SC300s got scooped up by tuners in the 2000s so some are okay others are riced to trash. But I know there are plenty of SC400s that were left to fall apart. Looking at ebay, we see an interesting spread. http://www.ebay.com/sch/Cars-Truck… The ones in good condition are a ton of money and the cheap ones are spent cars that are good for parts or a project. Would not trust on a long journey. If they were newer, I'd consider one to be a rival, but really I would pick the newer monte carlo over the much older SCs for a highway barge.

Something sounds off about that V8. Seems....tinny? Like the exhaust wasn't put together correctly. I can't quite put my finger on it but it sounds like a high pitched rattle. In any case, I prefer the LS sounds better just to piss you off :P

First and foremost the SC comparison was to show how shitty & behind the times the GM cars were. #HadAllThatShitIn92

Second, could you be anymore GM biased?!?!!?!11!? Two little things breaking on a car with over 200k on it is impressive. Does anything GM even make anything that lasts that long other than their trucks?

Have fun with your under steer!

When has chevrolet EVER been a tech leader? I could pull all the shit my 1991 audi has over your SC to prove that your SC wasn't so fancy despite being a "luxury" car. That comparison is so meaningless when the SC was probably at least double the price of the monte carlo of the time.

And you probably get paid by lexus to defend the 400 over the 300 which at least came with a manual to overcome that fucking automatic never wanting to shift. And no, the alternator and water pump are not "little" things. If you weren;t trying to come at me, you'd be saying the same thing. And considering my mom's 2001 has somewhere around 160k on it, I'd say it's doing as good if not better than your SC. Had the timing belt/water pump done at 125k and the trans was rebuilt at 130k. Oh and ummm....just a question.....how much work was done to your car before you got it? And not just what the PO told you. Do you really think all those parts were originals? Really?

So if you get another one, let me know when you need a lift and I cantake you to get parts in the SS. Who knows, you might enjoy the extra legroom. And just to get in a low blow - maybe if you had some understeer you'd still have yours.

Baybey that was low blow ... but I bought it as a beater car and I had over my fair share of fun so I ain't even mad. I used a cheap Japanese RWD car to drift all the time!! *GASP*

Also just FYI all that shit was original, I had the worst fucking original owner, mofo didn't do a damn thing. And this sentence shows you clearly don't know what you're talking about "And you probably get paid by lexus to defend the 400 over the 300 which at least came with a manual to overcome that fucking automatic never wanting to shift"

The monte didn't come with a manual and my car had a power button which made the tranny hold gears longer and shift faster .... bbbiiiiittcchhhhh.
