I absolutely hate it with all these new cars with that stupid little 1/8th of a window. I know there is probably some design and engineering reason for it, but its still hideous! Its pretty much my only complaint on the toyobarus. Honda is most notorious for this felony however.. I just cant do it, i want the entire window to go down. And put that mirror back in the corner and not on a body line. Speaking of body lines, dont get me started on the doors pull handle's....

Having driven a Civic with one of those little windows, they help a lot more than you think they would.

I rented a 2013 Kia Rio sedan (not by choice) once and that thing drove me crazy!

They probably are there because the design would not allow for that large of a path to lower the window into the door. They'd win all the things if they made them vent windows ;)

I thought it had something to do with the rake of windshields on newer cars. The glass still has to move up and down into the door and at that steep of an angle, the glass wouldn't fit into the door as it moves down, so they 'cut' a section out of it and put the little segment window in.
I'd be fine with this, if these little segment windows rotated like they did on my old Hilux pickup. :D
Not my truck, but you can see one in this image.

Honda has been doing full windows up front for many years, and never had issues making them go all the way down. Im sure that wasnt the reasoning.
Although, you point reminds me of my pet peeve with the new tahoes, the rear doors have windows that only go halfway down cause of the wheel arch cutout in the door. The suburban windows go all the way down.... Thats annoying.

Million dollar idea
Turn these little windows into power-actuated vent windows. Like on the old cars but new and shiny and technological .

I remember the old lightnings had "crotch windows"
By crotch window I mean in the summer you could open the window to an angle that would have air blowing right down your shorts onto your ball sack. It's one of the best feelings in the world.

As the owner of a 2013 Honda Civic, I have to say that those windows are actually very useful. They help you see a lot more than you think. From the outside, it looks dumb, but from the inside it eliminates blind spots and helps you judge distances from the curb.

But is the rake on the windshield of those other Honda's the same as it is on the new Civic? That thing is laaaaaid way back. It's like the Snoop Dog of windshields, if there was such a thing.

They remind me of the front windows on these:

They remind me of the old "wing windows" on old cars that actually opened, and did a great job directing air at your hot and sweaty self when the car was in motion. If these windows opened in the same way, I'd be totally fine with them, but since they don't, I think they are dumb.

As the owner of a 2008 Honda Civic, I have to say I've never used those windows. It might just be my seating position, but I can't ever see out of them, especially the driver's side. Interesting to know that you use them though. I don't think the a pillar has changed much from '08 to '13

If you want to have a front 1/8th of a window, make sure it can be opened, like on the above. Then it is acceptable.
