Dreamlifter lands at the wrong airport!

Hilarious news story out of Wichita today. Last night at around 9:30 PM a modified 747, one of 4 so-called Dreamlifters, landed at the wrong airport in Wichita.

Headed for McConnell AFB, home to Spirit Aerosystems who manufactures the forward fuselage of the 787 along with many other things, the Dreamlifter accidentally landed at Jabara Airport, a small general aviation field a few miles north of McConnell

They've run the numbers and are confident it can take off from Jabara, they will be leaving around 12 today.

At least the C-17 is made for short landings...and at least the Dreamlifter made the mistake at night.

I'm curious how they would get it out if they ran the numbers and realized it wouldn't have enough room to take off.

Depends how close it is. If they could offload fuel and other weight and get out, they'd do that. Otherwise, they'd be pretty much boned.

Anyways no, this rarely ever happens. Like, never. It shouldn't happen.

How it happens is a crew flying into an unfamiliar area makes a mistake.

Unlike a fighter or something small, I can't imagine taking the wings off and towing it is even an option. The fuselage itself would be too tall to go anywhere.

While landing at wrong airports is rare, you combine that with people occasionally landing on taxiways or on the wrong runway at a given airport and you get more problems.
