I was thinking the same thing....there's a fleet of them parked next door at the DMV building on State Street. Why is this front page on Jalopnik??

Canada on an expired inspection sticker, huh? Almost made it.

Technically it is a police vehicle. The officers that operate these trucks are sworn police officers who are primarily responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. In Vermont however, all sworn officers carry statewide authority so don't do anything stupid in front of these guys.

The lettering on the side of the truck proudly announces the presence of a "State Officer". Whut sort of officer? Animal control? Conservation, perhaps? Water Purity? Maybe it's the Phone Police!
I suspect this of being the adult-baiting form of a van marked "Free Candy!"

It's nice to see they ordered just about every accessory. Bumper guard, bug deflector, bed cover, running boards, and extended mirrors.

I just got curious about this "Law Enforcement" bit on the truck (given that it's a department of motor vehicle) and looked on wikipedia..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Departmen…
>Although a citizen has a constitutional right not to speak or meet with sworn law enforcement >officers while under investigation, no constitutional right protects a person's motor vehicle >registration with a state agency.
What. The. Fuck. Considering that I grew up seeing DMV workers as crotchety old ladies taking care of paperwork. The fact that they can do stuff to you without constitutional protection (on your part) is down right
terrifying
to see in common practice. When the hell did the DMV get superpolicemen and which states have them?

I was driving home one night after an evening shift, admittedly at a leisurely pace, and suddenly there were headlights WAY close behind me, blinding me in all three mirrors. It stayed there a bit, and I started considering pulling over for them to pass. But then there were blue lights flashing, too. So, thinking, "What the goddamn fuck?" I started to pull over, and one of these dickwads flew past me. Middle of the night. Totally empty road. Fuck those assholes.
And in case anyone thinks he might have been responding to an emergency,
A) These guys don't respond to emergencies and
B) They wouldn't have tailgated me for several minutes before using lights and passing if that was the case.

DMV with a truck scares me less than the IRS with an AR-15. Or the IRS with sawed off shotguns. You just don't want to see an accountant with a scoped, full auto assault rifle outside your house!

Does every government department need their own SWAT team?

State Officer? DMV? Law Enforcement?
So is this thing a Cop...truck or not? Is there a Cop using it or just a DMV employee? And if it is a DMV 'agent' who thought it was a good idea to give a DMV employee what is essentially a Cop car?
The hell man...

Looks more like a truck used when they pull in Class A Semi Trucks for Roadside inspections.
UGH
![]() 11/21/2013 at 18:14 |

Typically a truck like this is used for commercial vehicle enforcement in my experience, or for pop up inspection stations.
![]() 11/21/2013 at 20:28 |

Well, I'm concerned because I speed passing the semi truck weigh stations all the time when crossing state lines.. I should stop doing that.

That's the vehicle the Vermont Truck Squad uses to enforce DOT rules on CMV's. They do carry weapons and their ticket books are capable of being used on cars also so don't mess with them.
![]() 11/21/2013 at 21:10 |

Truckers call they officers "Creeper Cops" notice the creeper leaning against the rear bumper. They use the creeper to go under CMV's to look for violations.

What is even better are the black vans they now have with a very dark set of charcoal colored decals that resemble what is on the truck above...Because nothing says pull over like a black child molester van with blue lights.

I haven't lived in Vermont for a year now, but, I have seen these guys with privately owned vehicles pulled over on the highway. I'm not sure if they were speeding or had expired inspection stickers or what, but they do wait on the emergency turnaround lanes regular cop style.

Oh the list of things they look for are long, but a few: lights, glass, tire condition and vehicle balance. Also the IFTA sticker (I think that's the name) which shows that the truck is legal (its colour coded by year). Heck, they might even be looking for mud flaps, because IIRC those are required on a semi.
