Move close enough to university I'll teach at so that when the 80's Ferrari that I'm going to buy breaks down I can ride my bicycle to work.

Or buy a scooter.

I have scooter at home when one of my cars breakdown. In indonesia that thing is super cheap, you can buy one, very good one, for somewhere around 500-700 bucks.

I think of buying that exact car. Values have to have bottomed. You can get them super cheap right now

Aya! Don't you have like 5 damn cars! How do all of those break at once.

Anyways, that also would work. I would actually love a vintage vespa, though that's probobly another thing that would break down constantly.

1. Put in American small-block V8.

2. ?????

3. PROFIT

??????= Lots of cussing, yelling, and wrenches being thrown. Though in all honesty I don't think a Ferrari without it's engine would really be worth the trouble. It would be like falling in love with a beautiful woman only to discover that she has a dick. She's wonderful but it's missing the key component.

TL;DR A Ferrari without a Ferrari engine is a transvestite.

Though Tanner once said a scooter causes discomfort - grabbing one's trousers up high and giving them the wedgie. That was the reason I traded the Burg for my 919.

Just remember "The cheapest Ferrari you buy will be the most expensive Ferrari own."

Exactly. X )

Also, ???? would include lots of welding, computer and gauge replacement, custom transmission work, etc, etc.

But my opinion of such a combination doesn't match your comparison (but it was damn funny XD)

And the PROFIT part would only be figurative. Very, very figurative.

Scooters definitely cause discomfort, but of a different sort. I once fixed a Honda Jazz for my buddy. Rode it for a total of 5 minutes to clear the carb, got whistled at twice and hollered at once (I'm a guy). Never again..

This. Isn't the worst idea I've ever heard. I like it.

The most dubious part of this plan is the part where you land a job teaching at a university... Now I don't know you, so correct me if you've already been picked for a tenure position or something. However, the last opening at my undergrad had over 50 qualified people gunning for a single associate position, and now, in law school it seems like even more people are interviewing for a single open associate prof position.

My academic adviser in undergrad convinced me NOT to go straight to grad school after college, and that was the best choice I have ever made. Probably because I wanted to go straight for an MFA... Now I am ready to be back in school after 32 years of seeing how shitty the corporate world is. Bottom line: You might want to pick another career path that would give you better chances of being able to actually buy the 80's Ferrari in the first place.

Sorry for being a Debbie Downer.

I live ~2 miles from my office (I teach, but am not yet a Professor, so no Ferrari for me, sadly) and my preferred commuter tool is a totally sweet 1965 Honda Cub. With some... modifications. (POWAAAAAA!!!!!)

Its a good plan. Now get to it!

True sometimes. But not 100% of the time.

While newer Ferraris have cheaper parts and labor they also cost SO much to buy. I priced a 2 year old 458 Spider for the heck of it the other day (can't afford it, was just curious). Man they are expensive!! Way more than I thought. The monthly payment would pay for most service jobs on an older Ferrari :P

I like being in a walkable neighborhood. I can go places when my car breaks!

Too bad I have the reliable car now and when I had the POS, I was stuck in a neighborhood with very few places (besides college) to walk to. Grr.

Oh my gosh, I used to—got stuck there after college. The nearest Starbucks was a 30 minute drive. Oh, and forget cell phone reception for more than 20 minutes at a time. Won't happen. Learn to love iMessage and hook it up to your sketchy redneck-spec wifi connection.

That sucks even WITH a car.
