Here's Pat Richard at Tall Pines Rally 2010 (which I'm running next week), showing ludicrous speed. At 5:25 he takes way too much speed over a jump (80-100 I'd guess), absolutely launching the car. The car doesn't take the landing very well, as he loses his brakes in the impact. You can see him using the hand brake to slow himself down for corners after the jump.

Kinja'd!!!

Pat, do you even lift?

Ack. That noise the STI makes on impact sends shivers up my spine. Rally at this level (or any level really) is madness. Keep us posted on your rally adventures! May the torque curve be with you!

How do you lose the front brakes without going through the front wheels first?

The cameras did not like the impact either.

We're racing a Fiesta. What torque curve? :p

I was wondering so I went info hunting. They shattered the right front wheel and when it departed the car it took the caliper with it.

If I understand pace notes at all it sounds like his co driver told him to do 100 into the big jump. Am I right?

And good god the noise it made was horrible. I'm going to have nightmares now; first it was spiders now this, thanks...

Nope. The 100 the co-driver calls is the distance of the straight (in meters) before the next instruction.

ohhhhhhh. Am I partially right in there are estimated speeds in the pace notes? Or did James May and his Bentley run screw me up?

Nope. No speeds in the pace notes. Some drivers configure their pace notes so the number called for the corner is the gear the driver should be in, but that's about it. Drivers are too busy avoiding death by tree to look down and check what speed they're doing.

AHHHH, I see now. What are pacenotes of made up of then exactly?

Essentially it gives distance of straights, direction and severity of corners, and any other item that may affect the driver's speed or racing line (bridges, jumps, ditches, water crossings, chicanes, railroad tracks, etc)

Oh okay. And you do all this while looking at the paper and not the road right?

I look up at the road to make sure I'm not getting too far ahead or too far behind, but yeah for the most part my attention is on the notes

Rally of Canberra Mineshaft stage scoffs at your tiny jump! ;)

If you have a copy of the excellent Richard Burns Rally game, you can have a go at it yourself:

Looks like it is suited to a Class 1 or Trophy truck for taking at speed.
