Level Sensor Failure! Hallelujah! $345.00 They did say that after the sensor is in, they will need to make sure all the struts are in good working order, but I think this will do it. I really love this car, but after this scare I think I might have to put her up for sale. Even though it is paid off, the maintenance bills have been pretty much equal to a small car payment and my wife is really getting tired of putting money into this car.

Thanks for all the advice. We really have a helpful group around here.

Can you convert that into "months you have to go without food" ?

My family still gets to eat, but I am out 1 month. You might have been the closest guess.

Awesome! Too bad you're thinking of selling, though. Is it the V8 or the W12? How long have you had it?

Lucky! I caught a similar break on my last car. My transmission went out 1 day before the warranty ended, I had the trans replaced (Ford Five Hundred CVT) and sold it as soon as I could. Replacing it wasn't quite as much as your parts, but it was a LOT.

If the maintenance is roughly equal to a small car payment, have you considered getting a 3rd party warranty? Personally I don't see the problem with paying to maintain a nice car as long as it's worth maintaining, rather than spending the same money on depreciation on a less nice car.

I really don't want to. I love the car and I've only had it for a couple of years. I spent a lot on getting all the maintenance up to date when I got it, but its getting kind of annoying to my wife for us to continually spend money on another spare car that we rarely drive. Its a V8 and runs great. I have not had any issues with the drive train. Just got new tires, before that was a wheel bearing, before that brakes, I had the timing belt and water pump replaced. It adds up.

If I do have to get rid of her, I'll let you know. I'd much rather keep it, its a wonderful car.

Timing belt and water pump should be part of the 80K-mile service, which is the most expensive service in the life of the car (with new tires thrown in, mine cost me $4K+). After the 80K, you shouldn't have another service that's quite so expensive again, unless you keep the car long enough to rack up 160K miles.

Or unless the suspension fails for real next time.

Good idea. I'll have to look into that before I make any more rash decisions.

I realize you're a Toyota fanboy and a VW hater, but just... no. These two really aren't in the same league. Not even close.

Usually extended warranties are limited to fairly newer cars (10 years max, maybe) and lower mileage, like under 80,000 miles. But if you can get one it would totally be worth it. They're usually around 3-5 grand for bumper to bumper but I'm sure it will pay for itself really quickly.
