Kinja'd!!!2 Kinja'd!!! 22

I reply to an email and provide someone with the information they asked for. The response?

Thank you...

Ok so what didn't I do that you wanted? Is there another meaning for ... that I'm not familiar with? When writing subtitled ... usually means the thought is incomplete. I'm going to... It isn't a complete sentence and therefore not a complete thought. That means there's more. Thank you... Thank you what? What aren't you telling me? GRRR

Most people have a poor grasp of the English language, and it's entirely possible that they're just too boneheaded to understand how "..." really works.

I know, right? I hate it when people end a sentence with only three periods.

When you use an ellipses at the end of a sentence, you need to put four periods. Some people are idiots.

In general, the ellipsis is a mystery to most.

Taken from the wonderful Automated Alice by Jeff Noon (to whom I shall love forever, for he is responsible for my namesake on here - The Game Cat)

But Alice had no intention of marching back into the mound; once she was out, she was staying out. "Maybe I shall be home in time for my writing lesson," she said to herself: Which gave her an idea. "Miss Computermite," she said out loud, "you're awfully good at answering questions, aren't you?"

"I most certainly am. Fire away, young girl."

"Answer me this then: What is the correct usage of an ellipsis?"

"No, no... don't tell me... let me think..." the computermite pondered, "I know it... I'm sure that I do... now let me just... there... I have it!"

"Yes?" urged Alice excitedly.

"The correct usage of an ellipsis..." the Computermite announced grandly, "is for the removal of greenfly from a rose bush."

"I beg your pardon?"

"An ellipsis... it's a kind of gardening implement... isn't it?"

There was a guy on Oppo (I think his name was Accord4all , or something like that) who ended all of his sentences that way. It damn near drove me crazy.

I sat there and read and re-read your title going "people don't understand the meaning of WHAT??? It just says "...". The question is unfinished!!!

Then I realized the that the ... was intentional and I decided to...

at that point you have to dbl check that you in fact did attach it. If you find however that you did not, then I am fairly certain you will not be called for an interview. My guess is the person responding to you is 'older' and reads sarcasm into every sentence he reads on his COMPUBOX 1000.

They were indeed attached. That makes it all the more confusing. File names were very simple too. LastName Resume.rtf and Lastname Coverletter.doc Yes my resume is in Rich Text format.

I see this a lot from fellow attorneys — usually either from typo on the phone or I've seen a lot of folks (age 40-55) use it as a way to say "Thank you [for doing that which was requested of you]."

I know a guy online who ends every single sentence with three ellipses. It makes everything he says look like he's being condescending and talking down on you, as if saying it was a waste of his intellect.
