The tires of the LRV had to be light and able to shed fine, tenacious particles of lunar soil. The solution involved a wire mesh over a flexible metal inner-tube. The tires would trap soil at the bottom of their rotation, and release it upon the expansion of the mesh at the top.

Cool to see in testing! I found these randomly the other day when somebody randomly mentioned "autumn tires" and of course I went and searched for "spring tires". And came across tons of pictures of these things!

Yeah, very cool.

I was watching a Discovery Channel special about the LRV today and it had much better quality footage of the testing. The carousel test rig (from my .gif) caught my attention, so I YouTubed the footage and got this.
