"It's a "Porch-uh"" (ikazuchi)

Just redid all the brakes on my M5. New pads, rotors, SS lines, and rebuilt calipers. Made the mistake of thinking it would be done in half a day.
The biggest time sink being the rebuilding of calipers. the DIY on the M5 board made it look super easy, but getting the dust boot on is a huge PITA. Managed to tear the first one and couldn't pick up a new one until Monday. My power bleeder came missing the german car adapter, so I had to bleed the brakes the old-fashioned way, which didn't work well so I had to take it to my local shop this morning.
Now I'm getting a pad (or pads) dragging and making a slight noise. Not sure if it's going to go away or if I need to rip everything apart to find the issue.
So much for an "easy" job. I have a list of things left to do on this car, so I hope this one resolves itself quickly and inexpensively.

Haha! Yeah, that's how you get off rotors that are rusted to the hub.

Thanks! When I decided I wanted an E39 M5, only LeMans Blue would do. Took me 3 months to find that car.

Do SS lines really give that much of a benefit? i would be concerned about the lack of flex causing increased fluid pressure and wear on other parts.

My E39 525i has cemented the M5 as my dream car. Fun fact: the Duralast Gold pads from Autozone work just as well as OEM, and they have a lifetime warranty!

I think my favourite part of this hammer joke, and the "I can't stand what a technical bore May is" is that original Top Gear proved that he is very savvy, and its all just part of the character

That's my favorite part of the brake job. It's even more fun when it's on a lift because you can get more leverage. I had to beat the living shit out of my front rotors when I replaced my wheel bearings.

there is nothing in this picture that indicates your vehicle would have rust! I'd eat off your rims!

For some reason the space between the hub and the rotor always get rusty. Every car I've owned does this eventually. I hit the hub with a wire wheel, clean, and apply some high-temp grease on the surface to keep things from sticking again.

was that the correct BMW High-Temp Grease? $169.99 a bottle?

"Made the mistake of thinking it would be done in half a day."
It is NEVER an easy job. In my pst "easy jobs" something always goes wrong. something will break, something will get stuck, it never fails. Hmmm, looks like my tires are low, better put some air in them…Tranny falls out.

Great car! Are those the ECS rotors, & were you on Friars Rd. this morning?

Also realized after I rebuilt the calipers that I should have painted them. They just look so dirty and dull even though I hosed them down in brake cleaner and scrubbed the hell out of them.

Yes and no.
I couldn't find any reviews on the ECS rotors, but the price was right. I'll see how they do once I resolve my dragging pad issue.
I live up in Escondido and work in Carmel Mtn, so I don't venture down that way too often. Most of my morning was spent at Escondido German Auto getting a proper bleed done. They were nice enough to squeeze me in first thing.

still waiting for someone to think of the milks

then what is the point? i thought the benefit was that they dont expand under pressure like rubber does which leads to better pedal feel?

Exactly. They're just rubber lines with a braided stainless jacket that keeps them from expanding under pressure. More of the hydraulic force goes into the brakes and none is lost in the line flex.

Lots of crying and scrubbing involved.
And the milk needs to be ice cold.

A lot of my friends run these lines on their track bikes. They're supposed to be better at regulating pressure when paired with a higher performance (or at least hellaciously more expensive) brake fluid. Also, you're correct; they're supposed to be more resistant to expansion.

I'd like to know how it all works out. I have been looking to use these rotors and pads on my next brake job. I currently use OEM rotors and pads for daily driving, swapping the pads with HAWK HP+ for auto-x.
