I have slight love for that wagon, but there is a reason there are not many left. And central lubrication? I guess that leaky engine counts

Arrange for enough exhaust leaks, and unburned two-stroke oil will coat everything under the car! Water cooling ensures adequate operation of this system, which also prevents the exhaust from rusting! Maybe.

I only just realized that in typically psychotic Germanness, the Wartburg's wipers are perfectly symmetrical and wipe toward one another. Can you say "giant column of water in the middle of the windshield"?

German form follows function: if the "looks gnarly as a mechanical operation" wasn't the function you were looking for, sucks to be you. I think an attack of the same spirit led to the Benz mono-wiper; though that probably works a hell of a lot better, it takes time to cover the whole windshield, so isn't totally optimal.
