Shitty? I demand an explanation to this. Dear America and Western Europe, please don't discriminate against Commie cars because of something you heard on the internet or Top Gear, our cars can be fixed with a hammer and will last you 'til the end of the apocalypse. Our vehicles are durable...

...and almost all of them are RWD and manuals. Sorry. But this is a pet peeve of mine. Slavic/Commie cars aren't "shitty".

You know how you may call your best friend a "bastard" as a term of endearment? Same thing. I have both lived and traveled in the former USSR (for lack of a better term) for the last decade. I have a MASSIVE soft spot for the automotive output of Gorky and Tolyatti. That said, I notice you did NOT mention "reliable," which is where the "shitty" comes in again. No question though about durable, badass, etc...

EDIT: I don't know how long you've been around here, but hang around long enough and you'll realize how much Opponauts truly love Soviet metal. Where are you from?

It depends on your definition of shitty, but I do somewhat agree with you. However, despite being Western-European my parents did have a few commie cars (a VAZ 2101 and a 2105) in the 80s. Both ended up on the junkyard when they were 8 years old due to severe rust damage. The mk2 Golf my parents got after these Ladas is still in existence today, over 2 decades after the last Lada was junked. So from my anecdotal experience I'd say the Ladas weren't great.

Okay, but there is more to Slavic vehicles than Ladas. And besides, German cars set an extremely high bar.

I see what you mean and I sort of understood you and other people are treating these cars like that, but that label has to come from somewhere. And yeah, I also see your point with the reliability. But these cars were simple, you can fix them with a hammer.

I admit I've only been here a couple of weeks. I live in Poland most of the year, but travel to the United States often. The last three out of those five cars are Polish :)

True, although I'd like to limit that 'extremely high bar' to German cars built in the late 80s +-5 years.

I was in Warsaw for a weekend this summer. Great city btw. Anyway, I've seen very few 'commie' cars there. A few (3? 4?) FSOs used as taxis, a street parked Fiat-based Lada and there was a Trabant on display somewhere. That was it. I had expected many more.

Nice, I live in Warsaw.

Kind of depends where you went in Warsaw. If you spent most of your time downtown, I'm not surprised. Go out of Warsaw into the countryside, those old cars will be commonplace.
