Seemed fine to me

Wrapping up a receiver and cutting off his route before the ball gets there is legal if the refs want to go home.

Pretty much. Conclusion, fuck the NFL

They made a mistake by throwing a flag in the first place, and then picked it up. It's all good.

The ball was intercepted before it got close to the receiver, making it an uncatchable pass. You can't call pass interference on an uncatchable pass.
That's the rules.

Fuck the patriots. Fuck Tom Brady. Suck it. Woot woooooottttttt

This exactly. Even if Gronk wasn't covered by the linebacker, the other defender was in front and he would've picked it off anyways.

Not even, he was being facegaurded far before the ball got there and then got wrapped up when he tried to make a play on the ball. Thats a face-gaurd, a hold, and a pass interference all on the same play. Does he catch it if he doesn't? Maybe not, BUT it's still illegal.
![]() 11/19/2013 at 00:11 |

It was picked off before he would have even had a chance.
Also, no complaints about calls not going the Patriots way, tuck rule bullshit.
![]() 11/19/2013 at 00:12 |

It wasn't even close to un-catchable. Gronk at the very least gets a hand on that ball if he isn't wrapped up a good 3 steps before the ball gets there.

While on one hand I completely agree with that statement, at the same time I'm sick of seeing bullshit calls in the NFL.

I dunno. I wanted the Panthers to lose and I still didn't think that call was definitely pass interference. It was one of those 50/50 calls because the receiver was pretty far from where the ball was intercepted when he was held. It didn't seem, at least in the replay, that Gronk could have got to the ball first if not held.
And also refs are very hesitant to call that foul on the final play. It's like in the NBA when refs don't want to decide the game by calling a 50/50 foul on the final shot. Not saying I necessarily agree with it, but it just is that way. I'm a Niners fan and this "let them play" tendency on the last play burned me in the super bowl last year. While I definitely would have preferred the Niners got the pass interference on that final play I understood that the refs were doing what "they were supposed to do" by not calling pass interference. It seemed like they decided the pass was uncatchable tonight after huddling up and picked up the flag.
I can understand you being upset. But it seems a little harsh to say fuck the NFL over that call. There have been some much worse calls this year. It's getting harder and harder for defenders to do their jobs without getting called for fouls. Had they not picked up the flag and the Pats won it would have pissed a lot of people off because the sport has already become so offense-centric.

Bull, he never had a chance to even try to make a play on the ball. You can't negate the fact that Gronk is freakin huge, and happens to make a career off making those plays.

Hell I'd prefer to watch the Pats get murdered fair and square, but saying a receiver "might" not have been able to make a play on a ball but was interfered with is not even close to being a valid reason for a no call. If there's the slightest possibility that a player can make a play on a ball and he's interfered with, then it's pass interference, no if's and's or but's about it. That's the rule.
And I'm not saying fuck the NFL because of one call, I'm saying fuck the NFL because of how pathetic the officiating and politics have been handled the last few years. It's just becoming more and more noticeable with time.

...except for the fact it's intercepted before it gets within 10 feet of him.

If that was me I probably would've reacted even less admirably.
I dunno. It pisses me off that a good game gets tainted on a call like that.

It would have been tainted either way, remember green bay v Seattle last year?

Gronk went to cut back before the ball was even half way to him when he got wrapped up...
In my eyes Gronk would've had a chance to make a play towards the ball had he not been wrapped up. Whether or not I think he would've gotten all the way under the corner to get to it is irrelevant. He was denied the opportunity to make a play on the ball.

Or the Lions vs Bears a couple years ago. Then San Fran last year, Denver and San Diego a few years back, etc.

Now that I think about it I admit I don't know the exact rule. I didn't look it up. I just went off what the "experts" on the telecast were saying. They seemed to think the rule was that it's a no call if the offensive player didn't have a 100% chance of getting to the ball.
Hopefully the officiating is good in the playoffs. The worst thing is blown calls in the playoffs. At least in the regular season a good team has a chance to make up for a game they lost due to a blown call. No such chance in the one and done playoffs.

Hell I'd expect at least one key questionable call in the playoffs this year. Especially with all the new rules in play.

There are way too many new rules. The rulebook needs to be simplified. I went through a sales tax audit at work this year and the NFL's rulebook is looking like the state of CA's sales and use tax laws. So many conditions and exceptions. They need to take a holistic look at the entire rulebook and streamline it, then minimize the number of changes each year.

Refs are humans. No one is perfect. People will complain about MLB umpires, NHL refs, NFL refs, and NBA refs... always.

I listened to a lot of sports talk radio this morning. Looks like a lot of people agree with your point that it was a bad call. I've thought about it more and here are the two reasons I'm not in favor of how the game ended:
1.) Since the flag was initially thrown there should have been indisputable evidence that the call was wrong to pick it up, and I don't think that was the case. I think in situations like this the refs should go with the initial call unless they are 100% positive it was wrong. And they couldn't be 100% sure it was wrong because it's impossible to know how far Gronk could have got if not held, so you can't say with certainty that the pass was not catchable.
2.) I'm not a fan of calling games differently on the last play. I know that's just how it is in the NFL and NBA because they want to let the players play and not decide the outcome of the game. But I wish this wasn't the case. Calls should be consistent throughout the game. I really doubt they would have picked up the flag if the same play had happened in the 2nd quarter. So they shouldn't change how they officiate the game on the last play.
I just wish the officiating was better so there wasn't so much controversy. The game sucked for fans of both teams. Pats fans feel they got robbed and Panthers fans don't get to enjoy the win because a lot of people don't think they deserved it.

Don't forget NCAAF and NCAAB refs!
