"Gamecat235" (Gamecat235)

I just realized I had a comment dismissed (from many days ago). And for the life of me, I can't really figure out why other than I chose a dissenting opinion from the person I was responding to. I believe I was respectful, and that I was very on topic and at least voicing an opinion which could lead to a clarification of their point.
I am not going to call out names, or point to the article, and I beg any of you to not go digging and attempt to figure out who and why.
However, I am going to state that the level of respect I have for this individual has gone from my baseline (everyone gets respect, until they lose it) to, uh, I just won't respond to you ever. Because there is no gain in it. It would be a waste of my time.
I understand dismissing people, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! But if someone chooses to do so because of a simple challenge to their initial premise. Opinions may be formed.

If somebody is polite and knows what they're talking about, then there is no reason to dismiss.

I'm not trying to figure out who it was, just trying to create extra context; this wasn't a random burner, it was an active oppo member?

I can understand you losing respect for that person. When someone disagrees with me, I'm okay with it unless they are vulgar about it. I have dismissed several comments because they were disgusting. I have no idea if anyone has dismissed a comment from me.

I'm sure it was I don't think Gamecat would get upset over a burner.

Is there a notification for dismissals? I've only dismissed one, a troll who was attacking me when I wasn't disagreeing with anyone...

If it was an active oppo member, then my respect for gamecat goes up as a mod. Here's a person who won't use his power to flush-and-forget out of spite or childish revenge, even though he totally could and I bet most people here wouldn't even bat an eyelash over it. We need more people in positions of power who not just utilize their authority, but respect that power in and of itself.
...
...Hey gamecat; are you old enough to run for political office?

That was why I felt comfortable enough to post this. And I've had enough comment history and recommendations and interactions to make it difficult to find it even if you knew what you were looking for.
I wouldn't have noticed if I didn't go back to read the original article that I had commented on.

Might have been me. If so, sorry if you're offended by it. I'll sometimes dismiss even well-argued comments if someone's got hold of the wrong end of the stick and missed the point, especially if it's a repetition of someone else doing the same thing.
I also did a mass-dismiss the other day after I accidentally commented on a Gawker article, and it's possible you got caught up in that by mistake. And if I've done that, I expect other people have as well.
What's the saying? Don't ascribe to malice what may just be accident...

Is it possible that it was dismissed by accident? I've almost dismissed comments on my phone because the buttons are so small. I've also accidentally dismissed comments on the desktop. And I felt rotten about it.

It was a commenter who is an approved author in the area that I interacted with them. I won't call them out, or shame them, that would be counterproductive.
I did feel that it was odd enough to at least mention it in an open forum kind of way.
I wouldn't even go so far as to name call, because this is a member of a community I belong to, but I do have to question the motive. It doesn't seem like a way to build relationships in a community.

Your dissenting opinion was interfering with their being right.

LOL. I am, but I have no desire to do that. That just sounds like a crazy thing to get oneself into.
Thanks though.

If anyone finds this, I'll mail you $20.
...
But seriously, this post is very skillfully vague'd out, and you comment on Jez and observation deck as well as here. No one's finding it.
...
But seriously. $20.

I will say that it wasn't you. =)
And you and I have enough of a relationship that I probably would have questioned you on it in the first place directly. No worries. I have dismissed my share of comments, but I like to use it as way to just cut short someone who is going nowhere.
Mostly I wanted to bring the general awareness to the community of what the effects of dismissing without any apparent reason were.

It could be. But I thought I noticed other comments disappear from the same thread, so my assumption there is that this is not the case. Also there is now a confirm for dismissal.

Again. I don't want to call the specific person out, and I don't want anyone else to either. And if they come across this, then perhaps they can explain, or not. They may feel completely justified. And that's their right.

I don't think it was me, though I did dismiss a comment yesterday because someone was obviously trolling.
Maybe he read your comment too fast and thought you were trolling?

No. I only noticed because I re-read the original article and then didn't notice any responses whatsoever to my reply, and then saw that I couldn't see my reply. So I hunted it down and lo and behold, it was dismissed.

Possibly, and nope. Wasn't you. It was days ago. And I do comment on 4 community blogs regularly, two main pages, and then recommend stuff on Gawker, Deadspin and Jezebel. So I am no stranger to commenters dismissing items.

I rarely dismiss anything. I figure if you are a complete idiot and do not know/understand what you or I am talking about, Then we have grounds. A decent argument is always OK. My comment on Google/YouTube the other day elicited some varied response. Most if it based on age group. Just because I do not agree with some is not a reason to dismiss. I know Gamecat probably had a good reason as he is not one to casually dismiss anything.

When I had a post FP'd this past Labor Day, I'd replied to one of the commenters who'd come here from the FP.
I suppose that what I'd said was too redundant for what he'd been talking about, but I was a little surprised to see a comment of mine dismissed... on a post that I'd created. It was odd.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over this, nor be writing an article about it, but if it can makes you feel better I often accidentally dismissed replies while trying to recommend them on my phone.

I didn't lose any sleep over it. And I won't. But I did find it strange. Also for the last month or more on my phone, I get a warning that I am dismissing a comment and a prompt for confirmation. So the whole accidental dismissal thing seems less likely.
