For the record, I posted to defend the right to take kids on planes. The whole child-less "keep your kids off my plane" attitude is annoying. I get being ticked off at parents with misbehaving kids who don't do anything about it.
But getting annoyed at crying babies on airplanes? Really? Put your headphones on and shut up.

I think it sucks, but if you fly frequently, it's smart to have somewhat noise-canceling headphones. People like to fly, and they like to keep their fresh offspring with them, so they're gonna fly with them. Babies crying in movies or church though...
Different story. If your kid is crying to the sermon or an enraged De Niro speech, promptly carry out your unruly child and go fuck yourself.

This is a real concern of my own.
I have a trip coming in April, where I have to move myself, my wife, and 3 kids 7 or younger from New England to Florida. I am seriously considering driving 30 hours, rather than flying 4. The cost is very similar, but the strain of getting them on and off 2 planes, and having to split them across multiple rows is just terrible.
I'm sure the other people on those flights would prefer I drive, but
30
fucking
hours
I'm pretty sure I'll do it in 1 shot, and I may bring a cooler and the camp toilet so we don't even have to get off the highway. I could maybe get it down to 22 hours.

I'm smart enough not to chime in on the front page.
I have flown with my son twice now, two times back in may when he was only 4 months old and we fly again next week at 10 months old.
He didn't make a peep on 3 out of 4 of those flights. The 4th one we took turns keeping him entertained and he didn't make much noise at all. The flight attendant almost made him lose it when we were taking off from phoenix back to detroit though. he was in a soft baby carrier and they made us take it off of him because it was a "danger to him and my wife". Because apparently hes safer sitting in her lap than attached to her. She said it would prevent my wife from ducking down in the event of a crash. My thought - where would she put the baby thats on her lap if there was a crash? on the floor? overhead compartment? He was nice and asleep and she made us take him out of it. I told everyone around us it was on her if he cried since all 3 other flights they didnt make us take him out as he was happily sleeping. They all got lucky he stayed asleep.Honestly like a lot of people said its about the parents, is also about the kids mood though, we can't control everything and live our lives on the baby's schedule. unfortunately we have family all over the country who are DIEING inside because it's been 6 months since they've seen him. It sucks and Skype can only make up for so much. With limited vacation time we tend to take trips like we have planned for next week thursday afternoon to sunday afternoon. If we drove the 16 hours to SC it would be probably more like 18-20 hours stopping to take care of a 10 month old and we'd be there for 24 hours and turn around to drive back.
Flying is our only practical option. You can get decent noise canceling headphones for 30 bucks now btw.

Holy hell there are a lot of people who wish/believe that children couldn't ride on planes.
Staying the hell away from that discussion on the FP.
/parent of 2, have had to fly with small children. Will apologize for behavior. Will not change my entire life to accommodate unreasonable wishes of others.

Shitty people of any age on a plane is no fun. I am one who flies with my kids. A lot. My wife and I go out of our way to be courteous to our neighbors and we don't always get the same consideration in return. In 6 years of extensive travel, we only had one flight from hell where our 6 month old son (at the time) couldn't clear his ears. We were the first row in coach of a full flight. We apologized profusely and bought some drinks for those around us.
I'm not saying they are angels on every flight, but we have taught them to behave and I will gladly trade a bit of annoyance now to know that I have given my kids an appreciation for other cultures. I think more American kids need this. We are, in fact, taking them to Mexico on Saturday. Our 6 year old is on his second passport and has been to Europe twice, Mexico several times and desperately wants to go to Tokyo to ride the bullet trains, see the Kei cars (bringing him up Oppo style) and eating lots of noodles.

I have absolutely no problem with people who have children on a plane and are making an effort. But I've had so many experiences where the parents just sit there and act like nothing is going on. I realize that there's only so much you can do, but acknowledging the situation and making an attempt to soothe the child really doesn't seem like too much to ask, to me.

Totally understood. When we see something like that going down we try and help/hint at good solutions as best we can. If the are too into watching Toddlers in Tieras on the IFE to tend to there kid there isn't much you can do except maybe talk with the flight attendant.

How about actually making sure they are occupied instead of making asses of themselves, because if you can handle that [ALOT of parents can't, it seems] then by all means take your children flying.
