This is my old one from 20 years ago...an astonishing slow 240D.

Kinja'd!!!

But yesterday I got behind a 300D that was in immaculate condition...and the guy was hustling it along pretty nicely with minimal soot from the exhaust. No bumper stickers, no chalked out paint...just a super clean and probably bone stock W123. It filled me with impure thoughts and lust. Help.

I get that same tingly feeling. I've had W115 240d, w123 300d, and a w126 300sd. But all I want now is a clean w123 240d 5sp.

Mine was a 4 speed manual, power windows/power roof and obviously the alloys. I loved that damn car.

I guess it would be a 4 sp. My 240 was a 4 speed with steelies, but it had the cool salt shaker glow plug with the knob pull starter. It was neat, but just not the classic w123. Hard to find these days not beat to hell or rusted thru.

Ah my friend has a manual 240D. I've driven it. I don't understand how anything can be that slow

I believe only the 240d was available with a manual, at least in the U.S.

That's correct...the US never got 'official' manuals in the W123 300D...

It took a different mindset...I did the simple maintenance myself but had a local Mercedes shop do water pumps etc...and they said that it was the slowest 240D they'd ever seen..

When I first drove it, my friend neglected to tell me he had the parking brake on, and the light that tells you was teeny tiny, so for the first minute or so I stalled it at every stop sign. I knew I wasn't that bad a driving a manual, so I figured it out and took the brake off. I don't think it got much faster with the brake off.

I currently have an auto 240d. It should be adjusted, but I kind of like the way my transmission is right now. It will run a gear almost as far as it will go(as if you were flooring it), but if you lift off where you want it to shift up, it will do so. Almost like a manual in that sense:)
