What if Merc stuck with their 70's-90's styling cues today?

I'd imagine it'd be a lot more confident-looking. I didn't think swoopy lines fit the brand's higher products. Mercs should be honest, but confident and proud.

This was based almost all on looking at pictures of the W123.

Didn't they have one designer through that whole time?

I don't really recall his name. I think his consistency made him pretty well-regarded.

If you want a long-lasting designer though, Jan Wilsgaard worked at Volvo from 1950 to 1990. He's responsible for most of the cues that can be found on Volvos today, such as the P1800ES hatch.

Update: Bruno Sacco is the genius behind many of Merc's best cars from '58 to '99.

We'd all be driving Ford Granadas.
U.S. spec Granada, not the sexy U.K. version.

Damn sporty. It'd fit with my theme, except that would be the AMG version.

I'm certain designers who manage to make it to Mercedes will almost certainly keep it fresh, but still conservatively rooted in that tradition.

Maybe it's my "dead simple" design mentality.

If you want, here's what I'd interpret the front to be.

After seeing Mustang II apologies on the FP I wouldn't be so certain.

Well, while Mercedes really had some shit designs in the last years (B-class, R-class) they really get their act together now with the new S-Class. And just look at the CL concept:

Kinja'd!!!

Exactly how it should be. Attractive, dynamic but elegant and (for a modern car) rather simple.

I think if they didn't do the S-Class well, they'd be in deep trouble. I like it as well; just that something like the CLA with its droppy theme seemed out of touch, although it isn't a higher-end car.

I really love the direction Merc is taking with its sports/super cars. They've taken the SL styling to some new highs.

SL, S-Class and CL are spot on. Perfect balance between dynamic and solid, classy design. CLA is way overdone just like the B-Class, ML, GL and CLS.
