Yes I understand nazis aren't politically correct. That said, WTF people/mods? You have porn on your forums regularly, and complain about the weirdest shit lately and edit it out.

Unless people are posting insane hate towards each other, you're acting like the jezebel proletariat. Can't get a post through without offending somebody, so let's just censor!

You guys all vote for SOPA too?

Sorry guys, this place really seems on a downhill travel pretty freakin' fast.

Tasteful porn is a lot more tolerable than being a dick, especially if it's racist or something along those lines. I'd personally prefer less of both. Someone has to mod, and that person has to use their judgement. You might end up deleting a less objectionable post or two in the process, but that is just going to happen.

Most "racism" that occurs on here is a joke. There are distasteful jokes, sure. They can go after the jump with some sort of tag. Honestly, I saw people dressed up as the twin towers on halloween. I was somewhat annoyed, but guess what? They can do what they want, and I'll think what I want to of them, and that's that.

People need to learn to take shit with a grain of salt. 99% of the things modded out are likely not meant to be offensive and aimed at any one person. If you try to tell me otherwise, I will laugh. I went to a highly diverse high school where most students made racial jokes, and nobody gave a shit. It's part of being human to laugh at our differences.

Out of the "bad jokes" I saw before they were edited today, I agreed with all but maybe one. And I'm not going to bother myself with that one, because as I said, judgement calls have to be made. There are plenty of places on the internet that one could go and make comments and post pictures without fear of moderation (illegal content is usually the exception) but I'm glad this isn't one of those places. There are places I visit where I might not be surprised to see a joke about burning jews, here I think it's unnecessary and in poor taste. I don't mind seeing that disappear.

I mean... Burning jew jokes are pretty old hat. While it was horrific, I don't see any need to censor jew jokes. Want to make fun of ________ atrocity that happened that I had to deal with, go ahead. I may be offended, but guess what? It is what it is, and I can go on being offended, maybe mention that was offensive, or think outside the box and realize how it can be a bit of a "hah hah".

Seriously, people need thicker skin. I get told better burning jew jokes by jews then I do from non-jews.

But if you had the power to magically change those WTC costumes into Barney suits, or move them 100 years into the future without harming them, you'd do it wouldn't you? You said you were annoyed by them, but got over it simply because you had no recourse.

We do have recourse, and we can edit things that we think should be edited. We've stated numerous times that racist shit is not OK and overly crass or dickish stuff is also not OK. It's hardly a secret. If you're into racist humor and beyond, there are plenty of places online to go and get it, and it's been a longstanding position of oppo - before there were mods - to not do that here. I don't see how it is a bad policy, nor do I believe that because it is presented as a joke that it is somehow a different, acceptable form of racism and I'm just not able to see that.

Also, why are we suddenly equating nudity with racism on the Scale of Stuff? The two things could not be more different.

I think the whole bad joke thursday might have left a sour taste in some people's mouths. I know I found it annoying, mostly because they were everywhere and just crowding out everything too quickly for me to want to read anything.

I don't think I've seen too much from the mods, I think I saw one joke edited, other than that I don't know when the last time they stepped in was.

" this place really seems on a downhill travel pretty freakin' fast." That's just being melodramatic. Sleep it off.

1) No. I would not change their costumes. They chose it, they can do so. Even if I could, that isn't my problem and they can flaunt their offensive costume all they want. There are inherent benefits in understanding those things than thinking the whole world is a pretty place. In a way, their costume is informative. For the same reason, if you chose to, would you remove any offensive video that shows the real effect of war off the internet because they are offensive? No, they serve a purpose, and I really doubt you are for government censorship of the internet.

2) I didn't equate them, I'm pointing out the absurdity. In fact, an "offensive" (this is subjective BTW) joke can be way less offensive to someone than nudity. Certain cultures, in fact, view nudity extremely negatively, especially for women. So no, they can be drawn together in a similar fashion in this sense. Text vs. images in fact could lead one to believe porn can be more offensive. As they say, a picture says a thousand words.

Eh, it's a car blog. Oppo has always been a place for the random, but it's not really designed for nudity.

I don't really ever find racism funny, but it's not personally offensive on any level. It just doesn't belong here.

I've seen at least 3 posts in the recent viewing of oppo that I do on my phone in between classes, I think even within a day. Sure, they were annoying to me too. Doesn't mean the nature of this forum shouldn't allow it. Same thing with dance parties, I'm not really into it, but do what you freakin want.

No, not melodramatic at all. With the shitty software, lack of user support... Ridiculous editing. I could go on. The place is way the hell worse than it used to be, why do you think a bunch of people left?

Kinja'd!!! ddavidn > Kailand09

I'm not saying I was offended personally by it, or any of the other jokes. I can hang out on the seedy underbelly of the internet and hold my own. I have thick skin. But not every forum has to be 4chan. If you don't like here, you can hang out somewhere else.

I guess I'm trying to understand why the removal of potentially offensive content bothers folks so much. Some will get offended by what is removed, and some will be offended by what is left alone. Your thick skin that, in your opinion, everyone should develop should also protect you from being overly sensitive about what the mods remove. It's pretty clearly stated around here that our main rule is "don't be a dick." So, if we all agree to not be dicks, we should all be able to get along reasonably well.

Kinja'd!!! Kailand09 > ddavidn
11/15/2013 at 01:02

Kinja'd!!!0

The point is that thick skin should mean you don't care what people say. Censoring things inhibits people from learning. Whether that learning means "hey I just learned something like that is offensive", or a deeper meaning to what was said.

It's the same reason I'm not for government censorship of the internet. Censoring removes freedom, something that the U.S. should have, and for good reason. Unless some conversation leads to direct and continuous flaming of each other and is a spiraled conversation of hatred, maybe it should simply be ended. But really, why censor?

Kinja'd!!! Biased Plies > Kailand09
11/15/2013 at 01:16

Kinja'd!!!1

Well, I didn't see those so you haven't given me much to go on there.

I actually have nothing against the jokes themselves, I've got thick skin and this is the internet, no reason to let a little joke get to me, or anyone else for that matter. But I'm not gonna get upset over a little edit either, a little moderation is good sometimes because things do get out of control sometimes.

I do think it was melodramatic. I think to say it's going to shit is being overly dramatic. I hardly think a couple of edits are putting a damper on this place. Shitty software and lack of user support are a staple around these parts, you should probably be used to it by now. Gawker doesn't owe you anything, they're not keeping you here.

These little outburst come and go, this isn't the first, nor will it be the last.

And yes, I do know why those people left (I may have been around longer than you might think). The gist of it is that those people felt that Gawker was impeding on their lawns.

You said it yourself; Offensive is subjective.

Just because you don't think something is offensive doesn't mean it shouldn't bother anybody. While you may be perfectly okay with horrible jokes, this site isn't just for you.

Kinja'd!!! Kailand09 > TheOnelectronic
11/15/2013 at 01:23

Kinja'd!!!0

The point is censorship is almost always implicitly wrong. Sure, child pornography shouldn't be a thing, that can be censored. We can all agree on that.

The point is, who are those in charge to determine that? Again, it's subjective. And really, I don't want to be a part of something that has to have a nanny going around plucking out shit.

I never said I'm okay with the jokes, but I'm not ok with censorship when it isn't entirely necessary.

Kinja'd!!! crown victor victoria > Kailand09
11/15/2013 at 01:25

Kinja'd!!!1

Ok, so your issue is that things are being needlessly censored, and that people who have problems with said things should just get over it, and that it's silly that we wipe racist jokes out but leave in the porn?

I mean, we're never going to please everybody by doing any of that kind of stuff, but the goal is to please the community to the highest degree possible. The community, by and large, has shown that they are not averse to posting and looking at pictures of butts and boobs (behind a jump) from time to time. It's not like it's every other post. So those things have remained. By the same token, the majority of people using oppo have expressed displeasure at seeing racist humor or misogyny and other things. So we will do something about it when we see them. As for the argument that pornography is in and of itself misogynistic, possibly, but again we are only doing what the community claims to want. If the tide shifts and nobody wants any NSFW content of any kind in oppo, ever, we would enforce that, too.

Our actions are mainly for the purposes of cutting down on the drama of a zillion angry/freaked-out replies in troublesome posts, and then new posts about the stuff that happened in those posts - "OMG DID U SEE THAT?!11" - and so on. This is basically what you have just done by crafting a Nazi Mod post, BTW.

So basically I'd just say you should take your own advice and find a way to make peace with the system we have here because it probably won't change. We're not the PBS of the internet by any stretch, but we don't really want to become 4chan, either. It's a balance and it is imperfect.

YOU think censorship is almost always wrong. There's nothing implicit about it.

You ask why the mods should be the ones to determine right and wrong; why should you?

Kinja'd!!! ddavidn > Kailand09
11/15/2013 at 01:34

Kinja'd!!!0

I agree 100% with the anti-government-censorship feelings. They are trying to censor the internet. We only have one internet. We have lots of internet forums, however, and buy using them we agree to certain rules set by their owners. Freedom means the option to censor our own establishments. Freedom means that if I'm a mod, I can delete your post for whatever reason. Freedom means if you don't like it, you may leave at any time. Freedom doesn't mean we all have to put up with one person's idea of what all websites should be like.

I'm all for learning, and I read/watch a lot of things that are disturbing, "offensive," or whatever you want to call it, just to try and understand someone's point of view. I am having this conversation with you to try and learn your point of view. Obviously, I'm not going to change anyone's mind but I hope to expand mine just a little more. I hope you haven't felt any hatred from what I've said. I know my tone doesn't usually translate well through text.

I'm not saying I should. That's the entire point.

Also, I'd like you to give me examples of how censorship of freedom of speech is a good thing? Unless you use the obvious examples (child porn), I don't know anybody who likes censorship.

This whole thing could be fixed with required tags like [OFFENSIVE] if necessary. We do, after all, have [NSFW].

No, I have considered our exchanges purely under the tonality of debate- no "hatred" here. I hope I also haven't given off that vibe myself, as that isn't my purpose.

All in all, I agree with those freedoms. And I respect that. I just don't necessarily agree with their implementation here, and maybe I'm truly behind the oppo times and as I said in my main post, need to move on. Maybe oppo doesn't meet what I'm looking for anymore.

Despite my relative lack of posting, I browse oppo as much as anybody else, and have been for years (albeit, I didn't always have a username). So honestly, I consider myself part of the community, and that's why I post my frustrations, as I hate to see it go.

Why is child porn an obvious example? What makes it different, in a non-subjective way, from any other sort of "offensive" content.

And you are. By saying that the mods shouldn't censor anything, you're saying that everything should be permissible and nothing is wrong.

Good thing? Okay, well;

Preventing a release of information that would get people killed

Removing a photo of a man with his abdomen torn open from Sesame Street's website

Suppressing false advice that could result in people getting seriously hurt. (Drink mercury to cure a headache!)

And so on.

And if nobody likes censorship, who does the censoring?

You're cherry picking, as I said. And this has become an endless argument over who decides subjectivity, which really cannot be answered by either of us.

If you'd like to seriously ask the question about why child porn is an obvious example, which I hope I understood was for the sake of argument, I have to say I don't agree that it is a very good mechanism for this argument.

Either way, I'm respectfully going to stop replying to this one. Neither of us will give in, and have to agree to disagree.

I'm trying to point out that Child porn is offensive because our culture finds it offensive. But should cultures who find nudity extremely offensive just have to deal with it?

Also, you can't ask me to give you examples of good cases of censorship and then accuse me of cherry picking. That's sort of the whole point.

Some of the dance parties and themes of the day really irritate me. But I am just one person and sometimes I do not agree with the majority. I really come here to read and look at stories about cars and human things that happen to people. (my story earlier about the furnace motor and the grandma e.g.) There were a couple jokes that I saw that I thought were truly out of place. But that is what mods are there for. Yeah, some of the porn goes to the edge, but it is generally tagged so as to not get anybody in trouble. Does it belong here? Tough call. This is such a diverse content site that it would be hard to put a tag on what is OK and what is not. All in all, I think the posters and mods do a good job of keeping Oppo weird without it getting stupid.

It was Bad Joke Thursday, not Sick Joke Thursday. For what it's worth, I think the sick jokes can be funny, but they're easy to misinterpret: this isn't the place to open that can of worms.

And as for the NSFW stuff, I'd much rather have a more welcoming atmosphere for those who don't have a sexual inclination that way - straight women and gay men, for starters.

And no, of course not every woman is offended, or even put-0ff, by a 'blokey' atmosphere. But some are. I'd be happy enough if there was a bit of balance - some hot men, for those inclined that way - but that's not going to happen whilst there's no balance: catch 22.

Anyway, better for the mods to err on the side of caution.

the problem with the theme posts is that they take up too much place. The daily theme, if people really want to do that should be in one post, then people could just add comments. Sure we can go off topic a bit, but come on guys.

The FP of oppo is basically 1 car related post, then joke after joke, then once in a while car related post.
