It's because all my comments still end up in the grey zone. I know I don't venture out the FP very often, but when I do, I'm pretty sure each of my comments is pure gold. Anyways, check out this boneyard left over from WWII under the waters of Kwajalien lagoon in the Marshall Islands.

The fighting left some of them down there, but at the end of the war hundreds of planes were just pushed into the depths to rot. A lot of them are still remarkably intact thanks to aluminium bodies and gentle waters.

Front page commenting, and especially AOTD is not only about making good comments, but getting there early enough.

If I get to a post more than 30-45 minutes after it was posted, very rarely will I bother posting anything other than a reply to another comment. Otherwise, its pretty unlikely to be seen and even less chance of getting replies or noticed by Jalopnik staff and followed/ungreyed.

Just went and recommended it. It's not too far down the list and whoever does the AOTD is usually pretty good at going through the whole list.

It's a good answer, I think it's got a good chance.

As for getting ungreyed, get on the FP more. You can't really complain when its sort of your own doing. If you make good, early comments consistently a Jalopnik author/editor will notice and follow you.

Yeah I got COTD once with some off the cuff BS just because I was in the right conversation at the right time. Don't take it personal if your comment doesn't get noticed. It really does boil down to dumb luck.

Travis, this isn't typically my style, but I'm going to be blunt. If you're in the giving mood, I'd absolutely love to be out of the gray on the FP. Like an S2000 that is never revved above 5K, I have so much to give…but the grey is so defeating. Cheers.

Travis, I've been trying to get this done for awhile. How can I do it? I feel like 99.99% of my comments on the front page have a lot of thought and effort put in to them (the .01 is the obligatory "pretty sure that's a lambo, dude" ) but I keep having to share my posts to Oppo in an attempt to get them ungreyed. Any extra love?

That's just crap luck but if you make good comments frequently enough, someone will notice. Hanging back in Oppo and rarely visiting the front page only makes it worse. I usually go through the grey and promote comments when I join in and I'm sure others do as well, that'll help get you noticed.
