Yesterday, I saw an immaculately clean 240Z with the most disheveled interior ever (full of boxes and junk) and wanted to save it. But since I don't have money... or a job... or a license... or even a permit (yet), it got me thinking. Oppo, what was your first job? And what was your first car?
I'd love to hear- well read, the stories, so do type away!

Go and get your permit, man! Come to the driver side.
The main thing with S30s (or any classic Japanese steel, for that matter) is the body condition; they don't take well to even slight corrosion. You can get an L24 for cheap, and you can rummage around for interior pieces pretty easily due to race car conversions. I don't have a job (yet), but starting tomorrow I'll be volunteering at a mechanic's shop to learn about working on cars. Good luck!

Got a job at Burger King, worked there for two years to get a car. Ended up leasing a brand new 2011 328i xDrive under my fathers name, I paid the monthly payments/down payment. Got to drive the car for a year and a half until I had to go to college and my mother inherited it. I'm now in college, currently have a job at a different Burger king, saving up to buy a car. I'll hopefully have enough to get that cool 1.0L Fiesta, maybe even the ST!

Yeah I'd love to restore an old Japanese classic, or any classic really. I'll also have to learn more about cars first. Good luck to you too!
And I'm gonna try and go down to the DMV and apply this winter break. :)

"since I don't have money... or a job... or a license... or even a permit (yet)"
When I was your age (I guess, unless you're forty and still living in your parent's basement) I thought the same thing. I've regretted it ever since. Get a job, get something to work on, even if you don't have your license yet.
My first ever job was working as a summer camp counsellor when I was about 14 - day camp, I was just fixing bicycles and stuff, mostly. First proper job, I can't remember what it was. Back then there were loads of jobs where I'd do anything for anyone who paid me, and I don't remember which was actually first: could have been cooking, journalism, bike couriering, house-building, IT. I think it might have been riding a cargo-bike around Central London delivering organic food. Something like this, with a trailer as well:
My first cars were all through my parents, so don't can't. Thanks to being able to borrow cars a lot of the time, of having them for work, I've only owned three vehicles: an old Toyota I used for commuting for a few months, a motorbike for commuting, and now the E30. But if I hadn't thought the same as you when I was a kid, I'd have had my neighbour's BMW 2002 instead of him sending it to the scrappy, and fixed it up before I ever got my license.

My first job was an internship at a mechanical engineering firm MG Engineering. I was 15 so they pretty much kept me to filing and basic tasks like making sure the printers stocked. I already had plenty of experience with CAD programs in school though so by the next year I was helping design HVAC systems for some of the largest real estate holders in NYC. By the time I was heading to college I was just like any of the other employees sourcing parts and equipment from manufacturers and going on solo walkthroughs to get measurements to see the place first hand. As for my first car I never really had one in my name due to my family already having 3 and my university doesn't really have that much support for parking. I pretty much drove the family truck a Ford Expedition around when I needed to go somewhere which was convenient because no one else really used it and I was covered under my parent's insurance. Planning on changing that now though with me almost finished with college and nearing the time where I will no longer be covered under my parent's insurance I think I might as well finally register something under me. Current plan is to pick up a nice clean 1996-99 BMW M3 since they are at a good price point and a blast at an autocross.

Same here. There's a '66 Falcon Futura coupe in my neighborhood that hasn't been cosmetically cared for, which is probably indicative of the owner's lack of caring. I went the other day to see if it had a 4 speed or auto (it had a column shifter) and saw that it had a note inquiring about buying the car—I will probably go with a more contemporary car if that opportunity is lost. Anyways, a cheap and feasible classic is the ideal car but hard to come by. It isn't too hard to get your permit, and they have a study guide if you need it. Plus, failing only means waiting for 15 days to take it again. If you go hang around a local shop enough and show an interest (especially one with enthusiasts working there), they will usually try to help you learn some stuff. Keep us updated, and thanks!

My first job was slangin' meat in Walmart. A thankless job, but at least I got to wear a bloodstained labcoat. Plus it was nice in the cooler on hot days that Summer.
First vehicle was/is my current vehicle: 96 brown blazer (added jalop points for brown?).

My first job (one that I still have somewhat) was working on restoring an old building. Doing things like foundation work, construction, salvage, destruction. Making the building usable for the purpose the owner wants. He bought it to turn it into a small restaurant/store. The building was built in about the 1880's. My first car isn't really even mine. It's my dad's 01 Ranger that has been handed down to me. Title's not in my name but she's "mine."

First unofficial job: selling homemade baked goods at my primary school at age 9.
First official job: baker at my bakery. It's still my job to this day.
First car: 1987 Toyota Hilux 4x4 Xtra Cab. I still have it. Husband and I use it for off-roading, road trips, or when road conditions are too dangerous for our other cars.
I hope you'll be able to drive soon! :)

Just some landscaping and other under the table stuff during the summers. I didn't work in high school (because sports) and drive my parent's third car—a Hyundai Tucson—, so I haven't yet owned a a car in my name. But I plan to change that and buy a Ford Ranger on the cheap next year, before I transfer to a 4-year university.
