Only about 1 in 30 people you encounter will not try to kill you.

What's your tag? And it's not too bad as long as you don't piss the guy off with the tank like I did today.. Haha.

Watch out for assholes, i.e. everyone in free roam. If you drive past someone and see them bang a quick uey on the map, floor it and don't turn back. If you're craving a friendly interaction, try hanging out at the Mod shop and see if anyone will let you cruise with them when they're done customizing their ride.

I had an Oppo crew member shoot and kill me when I approached last week. I wonder if there are a few non-Oppo commenters on there?

Run as everyone else says, however if you join a crew esp the OPPO crew we will be nice. I usually go pick up a crew member or save them from asshats!

Maybe he was dumb like me.... I had no idea why some dots had a colored halo, and some didn't. Some guy was following me on my beginning missions and I thought he was trying to rob me after I robbed the first store they make you rob...... but he was just an Oppo member, tagging along for the ride.

Aside from the "run and hide from everyone you don't know", here's some tips for the early stages that I wish I knew when I started:
Bank your cash often to keep it safe in case you die. Don't waste time with the ATM, though. You can do all of your banking on your phone.
One of your first missions is with Simeon. He will tell you to drive to LS Customs. He'll give you a free vehicle tracker and a whole bunch of upgrades for free, so don't go there until you have a nice car you want to keep for a while. Anything really high-end ($100,000+ in value) isn't possible to keep unless you buy it, but there's lots of Sentinels and Schwartzers and such that would make great starter cars.
To get the Elegy in Online (assuming you're a Social Club member), you need to buy it for $0 from the in-game internet.
Races and Survivals are good ways to earn cash quickly. Also, you can sell cars (not high-end ones) for 10% of their value, once every in-game day (48 minutes real-time) of freeroam. Gallivanter Ballers (Range Rover) and Lampadati Felons (Maserati Quattroporte/Jag-ish front) sell for $9000 if undamaged, and are often easy to find in the city.
Don't waste money buying armour or extra ammo before a deathmatch or survival. There's lots of armour and guns (with ammo) that can be picked up from all over the "playfield".
Buy snacks from the stores (the same ones that you can rob). You can replenish some or all of your health by eating them. EgoChasers and Meteorite bars are the most effective, Piswasser has zero effect, and smokes actually harm you a bit. Select them from your inventory (hold the back/select button). Holding the button will ensure you eat the entire snack and get the most health possible. To eat them instantly, select them while you're aiming. To eat them without having to go to your inventory, change your "action" to "eat snack". Your "action" is what your character does when you press both thumbsticks in (L3 & R3), and it is found in the same back/select "Interaction Menu" as your inventory.
And tips for later on when you can afford a property:
Once you own a garage, driving a car inside will add a free tracker and repair it for free.
All of the 2-car garages are identical inside, as are all of the 6-car and 10-car garages, respectively. The same goes for apartments. Those with 2-car garages are all identical and crappy inside, those with 6-car garages are identical and are OK inside, and those with 10-car garages are all identical inside, but really nice with heist planning rooms and views to the outside. The only difference is what location and view you prefer, and price. I think that my $289,000 apartment is just as good as the $400,000 one.
You can only own one property at once. When you upgrade from one property to another, you receive 50% of the purchase price of your old property.

Thanks for the great tips... I ended up with about $10K in cash that I lost when I died from some player wasting me for no reason... I then ran to an ATM to deposit the little bit I had made again... glad to knwo I can use my phone.
When you do a deathmatch, do you keep the guns you get in that battle?
I ended up keeping a Baller for myself (tagged and insured) and bought a 6 car garage (not far enough to get apartments yet).
Didn't know snacks did anything, good to know.

Glad to help. I've run into high-level players that didn't know that snacks healed you.
Good question about keeping the guns, I should've added that you do temporarily keep any guns you've picked up. When you leave the deathmatch and go into freeroam, you still have them there. Once you leave the Online session, they're gone.
However , there's a nice trick to keeping them, provided that you're at a high enough level that you've unlocked that weapon. If you go to Ammu-Nation and purchase some ammo for that weapon, you get to keep the weapon forever. You can only buy ammo for weapons that you've unlocked, but it still beats buying the whole gun.
