I noticed some interesting artifacts while watching the latest !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! video - what is going on with the magic disappearing and reappearing Go-Pro Hero 3+?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

It all starts around 5:53 in the video...

Kinja'd!!!

Notice go-pro on passenger side a-pillar.

Kinja'd!!!

Whoa - it has pulled a Hoffa on us a few secs later...

Kinja'd!!!

The top of it comes back first...

Kinja'd!!!

And then it is completely back.

Conclusion? Ken Block's tire shredding awesome has caused a wormhole to temporarily transport a single go-pro camera to some alternate dimension. The big question is...what is on that flash drive?

8 hours of static....

Seriously though, this is not a one take affair.

In all seriousness, I'd guess it's some weirdness with rolling shutter or compression, or more likely a compositing goof. No way that could actually be two different takes.

I was thinking some kind of green screen effect - where they are trying to digitally wash out whites so that the white parts look cleaner and you don't see his previous skid marks and it just happened to take the GoPro with it.

Sorta like when Brick loses his legs in the Anchorman2 trailer.

I think you're right. It does disappear right as it crosses into the white, and reappears as it emerges.

My guess?

That's the camera that had all the previous take's tire marks on it. Without the camera, we have a mark-free "first run"

My take on it is it's probably an artifact from a program like Twixter. For these super slow-mo passes, they probably aren't using super high speed cameras. Maybe 300 FPS or so. The super high speed stuff requires insane amounts of light, that just isn't always available. Especially in a clip like this. So you bring in a program like Twixter which digitally recreates more frames between each frame. For instance, if you shoot 300FPS then add 2-5 frames between each actual frame you can get pretty close to 1000FPS. The problem with that is the programs use predictive algorithms to recreate the "missing" frames. As a result, sometimes you get things disappearing and reappearing.

It's possible it's a chromakeying issue where they've used green screen, but honestly I feel like from a production standpoint that would have been more pain in the ass then it would have been worth.
