Around the corner from my house is a family that has a seriously Jalop fleet in their driveway. They have a 2000-ish 4Runner, a newer Jetta TDi Wagon, and a 1st gen Mr.2.
Reflecting on this got me thinking I should challenge everyone to build their own Ultimate Jalop Garage, by browsing CL, AutoTrader, etc. I will give a budget with which to purchase all three vehicles in specific categories. Whomever gets the most recommends "wins."
The challenge this time is to replicate my example driveway. You need to find three vehicles; one each in these categories:
1) A 4WD off-road/utility vehicle
2) A mileage-conscious, yet still not beige/dull DD
3) A weekend toy
Total budget = 10,000 of your local currency

$2,750
3) 1992 Mazda Miata 5MT: http://asheville.craigslist.org/cto/4172371930

1) 1972 Jeep J2000
http://spacecoast.craigslist.org/pts/4147726751
2) 2003 SVT Focus

3) 1998 WS6 Trans AM

Total Spent = 8900. I would probably have to dump 500-1000 into the Jeep to make it a runner.

Screw fixing the speedo, drive according to revs! :D If my girlfriend can do it, surely Jalops can.

SVT Focus! Nice choice.
You'll need some of that extra money to keep it running as well. They aren't low-maintenance vehicles at all.

1) Utility 4x4:
Now, should the negotiations on my weekend toy fall through, I would get this dirty girl, the 1996 77kkm
Lada Niva
, for
1100eur
. This one has a winch, proper tyres, extra lighting and a swish rednecky paintjob. And I don't mind it one bit:
Can't go wrong with a Niva. Literally, anywhere you want to go , it will take you. It, however, can not take you anytime (eh, heh, eh... eh), as they only started building them in 1977.
For something with a slightly longer beard, plus, I'd wager, more utility, this (coincidentally) 1977
FIAT Campagnola
would do nicely. This, in case the weekend toy seller would be reasonable, could be mine for a cool
2000eur
. Plus, the engine is a refreshed Merc 2.5D pushing 95HP. Very, very nice. Paintjob, again, rednecky, but I likes it, I likes it! Who knows, it might even be period correct for one army or another.
Them rear party seats:
2) Mileage-conscious non-beige DD:
Either the 200kkm
SAAB 900s
Coupι 2.0T Talladega (185HP) for
700eur
...
...or, if that's too thirsty and torque-steerey for your tastes (ain't for mine, my current DD is a 240HP 2.3T version of the same engine), here's a conveniently priced (
700eur
) 240kkm
SAAB 9-3 2.2T... 116HP diesel
:
3) Weekend toy:
This
Westfield
is currently listed without price, but latest I checked it out, he wanted 8000 for it. Since it's been standing for so long, I could probably get it for
7300eur
, if not less. It's complete, but unassembled, with all the requisite papers. Hey, who said playing with my toy must be driving? :D I'd wrench on this fella with pleasure:
Now, if I only had 10k lying around... CURSE YOU, OPPO!

10 large ones of my local currency? Uhm, I can barely buy an almost sort of kinda running DD for that kinda money :( I guess I could find ONE car that could count as all three, if we could stretch the budget to let's say 15k? Then I could get a 1997 Subaru Legacy 2.2 estate, Manual with low/high and with "only" 265k miles on it.

Where do you have the unfortune of living that 10,000 won't buy three nearly running vehicles?
Have you considered moving somewhere else?
![]() 11/11/2013 at 11:23 |

I live in Norway, and no I'll never move anywhere else. Thing is, our currency is worth a lot less than let's say the US dollar... But we have rather a LOT of money.. I'm unemployed (sort of, I'm sick.. hard to explain) and my income this year will still be about 260k. Two years ago (that's before I got ill) my income was close to 400k a year. Cars are rather expensive here yes, but I don't really care, since I can live rather well despite the fact that I'm only able to work 15 hours per week (I love our health care system).

1. 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport XJ 4.0 auto $2900
2. 1971 Datsun 510 L20 5sp $3000
3. 1984 Mazda RX7 with 355 V8 and 5speed
Puts ya about $300 over budget so assume we haggle $100 off for each :)

http://m.autotrader.com/vdp.html?id=35
84 Alfa Romeo Spider - $2000 Toy has to be an Alfa for me....rwd, manual, Italian convertible. Perfection. Also I have $600 left over to fix it.

I figured there'd be an issue with this somewhere down the line. :D It's a shame we're not chatting in pre-2002 world, when Italy still used the Lira. The exchange rate when they nixed it was roughly 2000 Lira for 1 USD. Roberto could maybe buy 3 Buragos with his 10000. Used Buragos, that is. ;)

Half of my previous post disappeared it seems.. 10K US dollars would buy me a great selection of cars, 10K Norwegian Kroner would not :)
and as an addendum to my previous post, I think the average income in the US is something like 50k $US, in Norway it's something like 80k $US.
![]() 11/11/2013 at 11:57 |

Yeah, but factor in the cost of living differences, and clearly that 80k Kroner doesn't get you all that far.
Also, cars are expensive in Europe.
Bummer. There will be other challenges. I just have to think of them. Suggestions are welcome.

Mate, I'm talking US dollars here :) Average income here in Norwegian kroners would be 480k :) yeah, cars ARE rather expensive here :) But they are not THAT expensive... hehe

I have a regular ZX3 5spd that my daughter drives. Very solid car.
![]() 11/11/2013 at 14:06 |

The regular Focus is indeed a very solid car.
The SVT is like a pure-bred, high-maintenance animal. Only the best will do, so you have to pay extra for everything, all the time.
I own number 85, built 3-06-02. I know all about how picky this car is. That is not to say it's unreliable. Just, you must constantly be preening and watchful, lest you miss some subtle sign something is about to go wrong.

My Grand National is like that. Very fussy bitch, but worth it.

1) 1992 Jeep YJ $4950
Practical, stock, Wrangler with a manual and the bulletproof inline 6. I like the stock look becuase I could later put a lot of stuff on it.
2. 2000 Mercedes Benz E320 $2750
A nice, clean MB with the good 6 cylinder and an auto. Luxurious, decent gas mileage, and safe. This makes for a great DD.
3. 1992 Saab 900 Turbo $1400
I love convertibles. This a turbo convertible Saab. It is the perfect wekeend toy. And for $1400, the price is right!
Grand total: $9100. That leaves some money for either Jeep customization or Saab repair.

The key here is to single out the hand, and photoshop it onto every single car ad you post from now, on.

'02 WRX hatch. Offroad? Check. Reliable daily? Check. Weekend toy? Check. And I have $1800 left over!
What do I win?

Doing this your way, though:
1)) The 4x4.
Meet the Suzuki Sidekick. Basically an updated Samurai with a nicer interior and a better ride. This one is $2,200 and appears to be in good condition.
http://phoenix.craigslist.org/wvl/cto/413924
2) The daily.
80's style, German over-engineering. This 190E is in great condition, and would be incredibly comfortable sitting in traffic on loop 101. At $2,800 it's a bargain deal on luxury.
http://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/cto/419604
3) The toy.
...seriously, what did you expect? This wonderful example is $1,650.
http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/cto/414532
This leaves me with $3,350 to do with what I please. That means either gas and tires, or approximately 3,350 tacos.
