I never had any particular love for this car (nor did I ever really dislike it), but I realized they can be had for quite cheap now.
The European turbo version -235hp-, with the 5MT and less than 100 000 miles can now be had for less than 6 000$, stock and in a decent condition.
In addition, since some of them are over 25yo, they can now be registered as old timers, which means 30$ tax / year (instead of 1 100$), and no technical inspection.
Hence my question, what do you guys think of this car? Is it fun to drive? Or is it a grandpa machine?

As long as you got the one with Twin Turbo 276hp, you'll be happy.
The single turbo or the N/A is a bit too soft if you're looking for a car that fun to drive.
Plus it's reliable as fuck. It's a 'yota afterall..
And oh, make sure you put a good tires on those thing. My ex father in law once run that thing on spacesavers and the car just went mad.

Haha good to know. We didn't get the twin turbo over here (well, more specifically, they sold 500 of them in Europe as rally homologation specials so I'll let you imagine what the prices are), so it'd be either single turbo or N/A, as a second car.
Truthfully, I'm barely considering this, I just want to know a bit more about the car. My interest was spiked mostly by the low prices, but that's not nearly enough to make me consider buying a car.

I haven't heard of a 5M, but I know the 7M are notorious for popping a head gasket. My father had an 1988 Supra with a 7M-GTE and it was the car that started it all for me.

Yeah, Toyota incorrectly torqued the head gasket bolts from the factory. By now with the amount of miles on the cars and time the problem should have been fixed or won't happen on a particular car.

That being said, I had one about 10 years ago. It was a '89 N/A Targa. The car was alot of fun to drive even with only 200 hp in a fairly heavy 2 door car(3500lb.) The targa was really cool and more importantly every power option worked. Parts were hard to get back then, but looking at Rock auto now you should be ok.

Yep, I just read about this on a forum, apparently this is common.

I owned one for a while. Mine was a rusty POS, but it was my first car and it was a lot of fun. I would probably not buy another unless it was a turbo in mint condition.

It's a heavy car but it's really nice. With some basic suspension mods it handles really really well. And all the people that hate on the 7M engines don't know what they are talking about. Yes they had headgasket problems because the factory torque spec for the head bolts is wrong. Replace the head gasket with a new OEM one and put some ARP bolts torqued properly and it's as reliable as every other Toyota engine.

I've thought about these as well. I always liked them. Good to know about the 7M head gasket issue though.
