Driving Skill Erosion

Before going to a WFH role (2.5 years now), I was driving 50 miles/day (round trip) to work, on a combination of rural four-lane divided highway, rural 2-lane highway, and suburban to urban six-lane interstate.

I've found over these WFH years that my comfort behind the wheel has been steadily eroding. My situational awareness is not at the level that I used to call normal, and I feel more like a deer-in-the-headlights, slow to make decisions, than I'm comfortable with.

I do take several long highway trips a year, in the 12 hour each way range. I can get into a rhythm with that, at least, and I don't feel I'm significantly 'off' of my ideal... and in my opinion, I think I'm still better than many of the drivers out there. Of course, in the immortal words of George Carlin, anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac.

I know my situation is somewhat unique - not too many people get to work from home for such an extended period. That said, has anyone else in a similar spot felt that same erosion? If so, what (if anything) have you done about it?

I'm planning on joining the peace corps when I graduate collage and I'm kid of scared of this happening to me, being away from driving for almost 2 years straight.

Someday I'll get myself a WFH role. I W'dFH at least once a week with my previous employer and it skyrocketed my productivity. As it turns out, system administrators do not need to be in the office. At least not all of us. One would be fine, just to take care of any physical concerns (physical restarts, power outages, etc)

I would totes take a WFH admin job, in a gat dag heartbeat.

um... one way to fix this is to get racing. kart, lemons, track days, etc. including having a driving instructor teach you how to really drive.

Now THIS is a good (and fun) answer.

I do go karting (casually - at a place near here), but not nearly as much as I want to.

I'll tell you the secret about WFH...

It's code for "work 24/7... or more".

But there is flexibility you just can't have in traditional, office-based roles. For me, the balance is clear. I'm home for when they kids get home, I don't spend on lunches, I can go pet the dog if I want.

The flip is that any time I walk by my office, the temptation is to check mail... and get some work done... and... and... it just goes on.
