Jalopnik is somewhat of the automotive pariah. Let's face it, we tend to like the quirky and weird over the mass produced and beige. This can lead to some problems at times however, just how Jalop is something? Today we pit together the mind bending torque of the diesel engine vs the face melting power of the V8. So what'll it be? Which is more Jalop? Both engines are awesome, I personally don't think of diesels quite the same as most Jalops do but I get that they can be great. But that good ole' V8 in whatever iteration you want, American high displacement, German precision, Japanese technical monsters or any of the other versions sound like a recipe for a great time to me.
Make the call Jalopnik!

V8 will almost alwasy be fun. In Europe, diesel is the choice for those who want economy over performance. In America diesel is almost always... well

Obviously the answer is the opposed-piston, two stroke diesel engine.

Nissan certainly has that line of thinking.
I don't know that this is a fair question because all V8s and all diesels aren't created equal. A Ferrari V8 is more Jalop than a gutless, 80hp N/A diesel, but the motor in the Golf GTD is more Jalop than the lowly V8 in the Crown Vic.

V8, hands down. V8s go well with anything, I've even seen a V8 Karmann Ghia once, and it made total sense.
Plus, V8s are, maybe, the only engine that has a well defined character no matter where you go. You got american V8s, Italian V8s, German V8s, British V8s... V8!

Totally agreed. Driving an American V8 is NOTHING like driving a German V8 which is nothing like an Italian V8 etc
I've never thought about just how many different 8 cylinder variants there are but they're all so different and awesome. (well maybe not those terrible BL V8s of the 70s/80s...)

Exactly. There are even japanese V8s out there with their own high tech character you don't usually see on other V8s.

The old M45? Oh man it was like driving a turbo V6 without any turbo lag and a powerband that went from NY to LA
I love cars.

V8... V8s all the way. Diesels suck, unless you buy your car solely for fuel economy... and if you do that, what are you doing here????

Ok, Diesels imo are ok in: Anything that goes offroading and big trucks...
I hate the Audis though, I wouldn't want a racecar with a Diesel... Of course they work great at Le Mans, but there's a reason they don't use them anywhere not endurance related....

How about this championship-winning diesel rally car? It's not diesel for the sake of endurance and it wins races against petrol cars.

Do you really want me to list championship winning petrol cars here? That's going to be a long night...

Correction: Non-turbo diesels suck.

First off, just to be clear I'm not saying I prefer diesels, I don't. I just disagree with the assessment that they suck. And since you offered I'd like you to list the championship-winning petrol cars that competed against and beat diesel cars, yes. Offering to list championship-winning petrol cars that raced in series where diesel engines weren't allowed is akin to showing the superiority of sailcraft over motorized boats by listing the boats that have won the America's Cup. It's not a fair comparison if only one side is playing.

I think Diesels suck for the single reason that I am European and you can't get a more beige car than a TDI, and I can't really see any reason for buying one.
I can't list you petrol cars winning against Diesels from the top of my head for one reason: Diesels are the better choice in the race series they are winning, which in track racing is mostly Le Mans. Everywhere else Petrol is the better choice and therefore no one uses a Diesel, simply because Diesel engines are heavier and their only advantage(even in racing, or especially in racing) is their better fuel economy.

Europe's economy diesels do kill the fun and allure, I'll give you that. However in rally competition diesels have started popping up as a competitive alternative not for their endurance abilities but for their low end torque, which helps exiting slow corners and launching off the line.

There's some good ones, but then there's there the Deuce and a Quarter that got 200ish hp out of nearly 7 liters.
