Just to try it out. I did a quick beginner 10 minute 'shop of one of my pictures of the new Quattroporte. Check it out:
I just messed around with it then quickly made it look decent. Any tips or tricks you guys could give me? I've been watching some Youtube videos on how to do some of the more difficult things. I'll probibly post some more edited photos later today as well as the weekend.

Nice work! Have you looked into using Lightroom at all? It's excellent for most of the things you'd need to do for postprocessing of photos and also adds great library/collection management and RAW image processing.
If you need detail work that LR can't provide, you can always open Photoshop from that point.

My friend recommended either Lightroom or Elements so those were the two I was considering. However since Lightroom didn't have layer editing (something I really wanted and one of the reasons I wanted photoshop in the first place), I decided to go with this.

Not to take anything away from Photoshop, just to say you could try Gimp, maybe you'll like it. There are endless professional plugins for everything you could ask for. Also, free!)
Good luck :)

+1 for Lightroom, but if layers is a dealbreaker then it's a no go.
What do you use the layers for?

I suppose layers ins't the best term. I need to edit out objects (people, signs, stuff like that) from the picture sometimes.

I'm gonna go with the lightroom crowd on this one. I don't have PhotoShop even installed on my PC; I just use LR. There are some features commonly overlooked like the "brush" functionality. But if you need PS to edit stuff out, I don't think you can do that in LR

Have you used Gimp?
Pretty good program does everything I have needed. I can usually do everything that I could do in Photoshop. Elements is a cut down version of Photoshop for more the home/beginning user. So get Gimp and get everything you need for free.
For example.
This is done in gimp.
No masking layer, BTW those can be really helpful for combining images or hiding things like you mentioned.
Just a few different layers then merged them together. I took the car out of the edited layers with a background eraser just applied some basic filters like cartooned a layer then added motion blur to it and maybe a few other things like messing with the opacity of a few layers to bring things out.. Then merged the layers together after cleaning up the view around the car.
