LOOK AT IT
BEHOLD ITS HIDEOUS VISAGE.
I went nuts when I saw this on my way to work.

I would shit myself with excitement to if I saw that rolling monstrosity in the US

That looks a lot like a Rover James.

I am not ashamed to say it. I screamed. And had a gigantic, goofy grin on my face. The guy driving it (FROM THE RIGHT HAND SIDE) didn't pay any attention.

How do you know they come with the "freeway safety" package?

I just want to know how the hell its even here

No earthly idea. Here in Nashville, we have the Lane Motor Museum. It's a nice museum of quirky cars. They have a butt load of Tatras, some Trabants, a Peel P50, and a Reliant Robin. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if this Multipla belonged to them.
Basically, the Lane is a museum of Top Gear punch lines.

Was the saddest man it the world driving it?

It's one of those cars that's so, not ugly, out of the ordinary that it grows on you after a while.

I'd guess someone bought and drove it in Europe, then relocated to the States.
Not sure why someone would like that car enough to shove it through all our import beurocracy.

I've seen one of those with diplomatic plates in DC. Quite ugly.

I actually feel bad for that guy.

Jalopnik needs to do a "Generic Ad Models: Where Are They Now?" segment. We can start with this sad sack.

It's like the ugly kid in school that gets made fun of that is actually pretty cool.

I always thought generic ad models lived in a closed-off utopian community somewhere in western Canada.
Picture The Truman Show. Yeah, sort of like that...

For this guy, it's more of a dystopia...

He just realized that he lives in Canada.

I adore these.
If I had to choose between importing one of these and a Coupe 20v, I'd have to think long and hard about it.

Just to point out the licence plate says 'MULTIPLA' adds credibility to it being a museum piece.

Absolutely. I've reasonably sure that it belongs to the museum.
As May said about the Morris Marina "as a warning from history."

It sure is. It didn't last long but it had a pretty good innings in the end.

The Morris Marina was an okay car at the time, sure looking back it was a bad car.

I had forgotten about the coupes... Now I'm gonna spend at least 1/2 an hour looking at used coupes ads! Thank you sir.

It's actually kind of awesome.
Think about this: it's shorter than a Miata or a Golf III, yet it can seat 6 people comfortably, and has decent space for luggage. In addition, it's reliable, and all versions will get at least 27-28mpg combined (with the diesels easily getting 33-34mpg). Plus, it was cheap when new, and it's even cheaper now.
They "corrected" the looks with the phase 2 models, but I'd still rather take the weird phase 1 if I ever were to buy one (which is probably not gonna happen!)
