How possible would it be for me to semi daily drive (I only go to school 2 days out of the week) a 1980's FB RX7 in good condition. My drive most of the time is
spent of the expressway with one or two stop signs and is about 20 minutes and about 20 miles.

I daily'd an '87 Alfa for 3 1/2 months in the middle of the Texas summer, and only stopped because my commute lengthened to the point that my sweating would be suit-ruining.

Do it.

If it's a 12A or the GSL-SE with the 13B and they are tuned well, no problem at all. The NA cars ran well for a really long time, typically only breaking down if someone did something really wrong. Even with seriously worn apex seals you can just pour a little oil down the intake and get them to start up.

If you want to do it, there are a couple best practices to follow:

Always fill with good quality fuel, high octane, fuel.

Run some two stroke oil rather than relying on metering systems. Not a hard rule, but a rule I always followed with my rotaries. Not a big deal, just add some when you stop to fill up with gas.

Don't flood the engine trying to start it. They can't drain like traditional engines and this is how a lot of people hurt them.

Turbo cars are what gave rotaries a bad name... and again, it was user error the vast majority of the time. If you just poke around the internet there will be a lot of people with good suggestions. It's been a while since I sold my last RX-7, but those there the main 3 I remember.

Thanks! The engine warranty on my car will be running out next year and I've always wanted an FB or FD RX7. I'm a bit hesitant about buying a rotary but they're just so damn cool!

Sounds perfect dude. Infrequent commute, so you're not tempting fate too often. Short commute, so you're never too far from home. It may lead to some minor headaches, but I think in your case it would be worth it. Go crazy.

Of course you could always just buy an e30 and have just as much fun without the reliability issues. But that obviously isn't your thing if you're looking at RX7s, and I'm a hopeless fanboy, so just ignore this paragraph.

2-stroke oil. Interesting. I'm not a rotary guy, so I'm no expert, but I've never heard of such a thing.

Easy, if you sell the original motor and swap in a 5.0 Windsor.

That being said, even stock your chances are fine. If it does break down, it sounds like you have a few days to check it out before you have to drive again.

It's debated. Some people run premix (like me), some run both OMP and premix, some just run OMP.

Any car is DDable. As with all older cars though, you need to make sure that you have a cash reserve for the inevitable repairs that you will have to make, and are prepared for it being out of commission from time to time. As long as that is not a problem for you, do it!
