I was the only *nix admin left at my company when I gave my notice...right before I headed off to vacation for a week (they got their two full weeks after my vacation ended). Panic ensued. :-) "Should have thought about this before you froze my pay raises for the last three years, gave me no budget for projects and had me doing the work of four admins." Should have made the move a long time ago...
Good luck on the new gig.

In the last year or so we have fired or lost 7 people (now down to about 14 people) spread out over 4 stores/warehouses. I now work alone at my store and am told it's not in the budget to hire someone (even though I'm up 200%+ over my income budget, yes more than double what I was expected to make). We are also a hire/fire at will company and I'm tempted to say "fuck you I locked the keys in the store I'm done". Hate to burn that bridge but at the same I feel taken advantage of #SalaryBlows

Really tempted to do this now, but with a mortgage (growing up sucks) I'm worried about securing another job first.

Did it about a month ago. Thought my supervisor was gonna have a panic attack. He was talking about how he knew I was high risk because I was criminally underpaid, and he had just gotten a raise approved. Too little too late boss. Still gave them the hardest working two weeks I've put in since I was hired, and by the time I left, they were already lining up interviewers.
Best decision I ever made though. Moved from the home of the "newly wed and nearly dead" to a really cool area where I'm within walking distance of 10 bars, 15 minutes away from a Brewery, 20 minutes away from the Atlantic, and my Pay jumped by 40%. Plus it's a much less toxic enviroment, and not all of my co-workers are old enough to be my parents/grandparents.

Only 3 months til I put in my 1 month notice. It will be such a great day. We have been losing people left and right (that happens when you work us to death and we can easily make more money elsewhere along with a better schedule - oilfield). I give my area a few months until it crashes because all of the experienced people left, which is when I will say goodbye. It's sad when you are the most experienced engineer with barely 2 years of experience...

Congrats!
I'm thinking about doing the same if the job interviews I had pan out. Sad thing is I've only been at my current company about 8 months, but after being treated like crap and being forced to take unpaid 'vacation' so the company can post a larger profit, I'm fed up with it. I do feel bad though because I like my tech lead. They definitely brought me in planning on me being here for a long time, but when you treat employees like crap what do you expect.

Two weeks is the standard, your old boss can go fuck himself with a cactus.
Congrats on the new job, when I quit my last job my boss at the time tried to counter offer but then said I was lying about what they were going to pay me. Any dumber and that woman would have to be watered twice a week.
The look on her face when I showed her the offer letter still puts a smile on my face because I know it's more than what she was getting paid at the time.

Be nice, man. That few extra days of work could be worth it to get that glowing recommendation. Leave on a positive note and all that noise.

Oh yea I agree. I am just ready to go. I am well organized so everything I do is documented. Should be a smooth transition. I have already begun training someone to help out while they find a replacement.

Haha good for you. Yea although my two weeks starts today the end of last week was like blitzkrieg to get shit done. This week will be similar. Good for you. I am leaving for a better enviroment, less micro managing, a more stable/profitable and I suppose the ~25% raise helps as well.

Right there with you. Last of the legacy managers. Doing work of people that left/were fired and were not replaced. All while trying to do my job. I am going to work my ass off before I leave but just so I can be done with this place completely when I walk out the door.

The better job lined up should be the only reason you move. Although I will be in DC now so we can hang out lol.

Yup same here it is the goal of managers to make money with less people. I do not understand it. The cons do not outweigh the pros. Do what you gotta do for yourself. I only feel 1% bad for leaving. That percentage will shrink in the next two weeks.

Ha. There was no counter offer. And if there was it would have to be twice what I am making now. When I did hand in my resignation letter I did get a full 30 seconds of silence out of my boss. It was uncomfortable to watch it hit him like a ton of bricks in slow motion.

Do what you have to do by you. Explain all your reasons for leaving to your tech lead and in the future you may work together again. That is how I got this job. Pure networking. Was hardly looking at all.

Sadly this is the same thing I am reading over and over in this thread. People are just not being treated right. Good on you for leaving and not just taking it forever. You and your family come first and companies should know that.
