Honestly, I love the ridiculous engineering the euros go - but in the end, they both leave 2 black lines on the road, and isn't that what we all love unilaterally in the end?

Japanese go big distances too, but cover the job in plastic.
The idea is that if you gonna put time and money into designing an engine, why not pushing the envelope? Going to the next level? Kickstarting progress? Instead of just saying "that will do, let's grab some ribs and root beer".

Apples to oranges here, one is a high revving N/A motor, the other is boosted and all torque. The supercharged LSA/LS9 outta the CTS-V/Zr1 would better American motor to compare the BMW to.
