I am having a dilemma or just a thought in boredom. I have an AE86 now with stock engine with simple suspension mods and Enkei Apache II mine is below.
I have been contemplating replacing the AE86 with a E30 325is. They both have pros and cons. I just wanted to see what the Oppo's opinions are. Both can be executed very well after mods and can be as fast. Out of the box the E30 is more refined and has more power. Both have their own cult following. This is my second AE86 and maybe I would like something different (even thinking of importing a R32 in the near future).
Which one would you choose and why?

Personally I have never been into the AE86. They are fun and I raced a buddies in autocross a few years, but it never really was anything special to me. Personally I was far more taken with the MR2s we raced. They were brilliant little cars, with great interiors (the SW20 anyway). Between those two cars I honestly couldn't pick one. Neither really jumps at me.
Have you thought about going with something else that is similar? Maybe even older? There are a lot of cars out there that are RWD, small, and classic to choose from/play with. What are your primary considerations for what you want out of a car?
Edit: Found a pic of us racing my buddies blue AE just for fun before he sold it.

I would stick with the AE-86. I don't know about where you are but E30s are fairly common where I live and I don't think I've ever seen an AE-86. Clean HachiRokus are getting harder and harder to find.

They're both kickass retro cars, with not all that much between them. Any differences in performance, excitement or refinement can be brought up to the mark with minimal expenditure due to their popularity.
Which one do you really want?
Personally, I'd sod them both and get a BiTurbo. Why? Because pretty much no-one else has*.
*there's probably a reason for that...

You have a very clean AE86, which is incredibly rare lol, enjoy it. I definitely see far more E30s out there, and personally I'm a huge fan of the 'Rollas. I'd keep what you have and maybe go a different route with the build of the AE?

You say that like someone who only has one car at a time...

I'm a BMW guy, so obviously my choice is the e30. They're wonderful to drive, and they can look really really good without doing much to them.
That said, that's a pretty cool rig you've got there. Much more rare and much more eccentric than the e30. So if you're in to that kind of thing...

I'd say drive the e30 and directly compare. Sure at this age the quality seems to vary but assuming you can find a decent one I'm sure a enthusiastic owner would be willing swap drives or at least let your ride in one. Great looking hach btw!

Tough choice. Your car is certainly more rare as other have mentioned and a classic Toyota. Both of which is cool in their own right. From what I understand the 4A-GE is (or at least can be) an awesome motor. I would love to drive one some time. How easy is it to find parts for those?
The e30 is more common, parts are easy to come by and there is a huge e30 community that is very active, still innovating and bringing new parts/products to the table. I have one and love it. The sedan is really the way to go IMO because it the same car but a little more stealthy and practical. Also more power is fun and there are lots of interchangeable BMW parts for customizability (shift linkages, differentials, steering racks, suspension components, even crankshafts). I am biased as I really don't know as much about the Toyota.

I was going to go with a 20 valve 4AGE swap but I might go the BEAMS 3sge engine in the future.

I actually work for BMW now in sales and I have been here since I was 17. I am I guess biased both ways.
Parts are getting more rare and expensive for the AE86 but I guess same goes with the E30.
There is not much development of parts in the US for the AE86 but in Japan they go crazy although they come with a good price premium also.

20v 4AGE would be sweet. Especially if you went the super technical route and tuned it for ITBs haha

The AE actually has a nicer engine stock for stock - IMO. The E30's inline 6 isn't all that hot, it's a smooth commuter car motor with the potential to become more. The 4AGE is pretty much a ripping little engine to start with, even if it makes less power stock.
It's up to you man, it depends on what you want from your car. If you think you want something a little more refined, maybe think about an E36 or get the E30 sedan. Both are great small highway cruisers when kept up, whereas the Corolla is obviously more of a fun/ mountain car than a cruiser. In any case, nice coupe.

Take a look around r3vlimited. I recently got a center console with cup holders some guy had designed and was making out of fiberglass for like $70. I am on a wait list for a set of long tube headers that are being remanufactured for group buys for less than $600 a set. There's a guy who makes custom voltage meters that look stock when installed and tons of other stuff like this on top of a pretty decent performance aftermarket.

The 20v actually has ITBs from the factory. Too bad we didn't get those in the US.

That's right. Yeah, that would've been awesome. I wanna pick up an AE86 for a project car really bad haha
