Nine of 10 licensed drivers would consider buying a self-driving car if it meant paying a lot less for insurance, a new survey by consumer Web site CarInsurance.com says.

The survey asked consumers if they would buy — or consider buying — an autonomous vehicle if they could get an 80 percent discount on their auto insurance.

Thirty-four percent of respondents said they "very likely" would buy a self-driving vehicle and 56 percent said they would consider it if such an insurance discount was offered.

Google is going to need a very significant insurance policy if their tech takes off.

I'd buy a self-driving car.

Hell, I'd buy a self-driving car in a goddamned heartbeat. My commutes suck balls. I don't get enough sleep, and rarely get enough coffee. I never eat a meal on time. I'd rather spend my time dicking around on Oppo than idling down the freeway with all the other cattle. Yes, I'd still be technically idling down the freeway, but it wouldn't be me. I could leave my car to do whatever the hell it does, and have at minimum 2 hours freed to do other, more productive things like scour the internet for cars, read a motherfuckin' book, have a sammich or catch up on much needed sleep.

It would also help keep miles and potential damage off of my other vehicles which is perfectly fine by me. I'll keep the truck and use the (hypothetical insurance) savings to fund the SPG rebuild.

Hm... Come to think of it. These google-cars or whatchamaycallem, would behave much more predictable than texting teenagers, or other distracted people. No sudden swerving, or erratic, useless lane changes without using the indicator and so on. No more poeple hitting the brakes hard on the freeway to make a 90 degree turn and get to their exit just because they dozed off.

So us self-driving people would be safer (assuming the technology is bullet proof, which I don't see yet). Aaaaand we could safely swerve around these machines, overtake them etc. without fearing any road rage or other retribution. The heck, we could see them as moving obstacles and have fun using the road space between them.
