It said that 90% of people would consider driving self driving cars if it meant an 80% decrease in insurance costs. Here is a summary of why people want self-driving cars. I get to say I own a self driving car, Socially acceptable alcoholism, No more reasons to own a car, I.E. Self driving taxi of whatever car you need. I can play Pokemon on my way to work, I just want one, Driving is scary, and this one is an actual quote "I am in a constant state of horror whenever another car is close to me :(" Then someone says they like driving, many make fun of them, many horse jokes were said. But seriously, are we close enough to self-driving cars that we can have studies like this?

How well would these self driving cars handle weather? I've driven in lots of blizzards where I could barely see past the hood of the car and could only keep my bearings straight by looking for markers on the side of the road.
I can't imagine a self driving car could cope with these kinds of conditions.

Assuming fully autonomous cars become a thing, do people really need to own one? Without having to pay a driver, would it make economic sense to use my handheld computational radio to request a car whenever I need one?

Yeah that was the point the person was making. Need a van? Call up a van. Need a convertible? Call up a convertible.

I am in a constant state of horror whenever another car is close to me.
The only way this person should be on the road is in a self-driving car... as a passenger.

I know, right? When you are on a road its pretty common to have other road users near you quite often.

Where I live in San Diego there is a section of I15 with a 4 lane express (toll) / carpool area that is walled off from the rest of the freeway. They had been testing self driving cars there by putting magnets in the road every few feet (there's a lot of magnets). Once in a while, they'd close off the lanes and you'd see a line of 4-7 cars, bumper to bumper cruising along at 70mph. Pretty wild to watch.
I'd be happy to drive my car to and from the freeway, but have the option to merge into the center lanes (or special, blocked off self-driving lanes) under computer control and cruise into work at 80mph with no fuss.

Valid point. I guess a self driving car would make some sense to a non-driving enthusiast in an urban area. Hell, the few times I've driven in LA, Boston, Atalanta or wherever it hardly made any sense to be "driving" when most of the time I was just sitting there staring at bumper in front of me.
I don't live in an urban area, so I wouldn't really benefit from having a self driving car, not unless it could cope with driving on very rural gravel roads in all sorts of weather conditions.

I'd be happy to "ride" to and from work where traffic is an issue, I'm still tired or worn out from the day, could watch the news or a movie or sports, text, etc. Then still have a real car or 2 for nights, weekends, whenever I felt like it, etc.

I want one.
Not really for going to work, or the store, I can handle that fine. But have you ever driven to Oklahoma City from Kansas?
