I used to work in the piston pounder side of the aircraft industry, I remember when I was an apprentice AME (Canadian version of your M&P license) the first time we had to do a top overhaul on a cylinder head assy because the rings were leaking, this was on a Lycoming O-320-D2J, coming from automotive originally, I always knew pistons were about the size of say, a baseball or maybe a small-medium apple. When I pulled off the cylinder head assy, I was blown away, the piston in even a 4cyl D2J is about the size of a grapefruit, just massive I remember thinking.

Even a smaller engine like a Conti IO-240, the pistons are massive compared to a car.

This engine is huge! 11 liters!

Still, being air cooled and flat it's not too heavy and makes a lot of power. Perfect engine for a rally car.

Yeah, the displacement on theses engines is huge compare to the number of cylinders.

The Piper Warrior I used to fly was powered by a Lycoming O-320 which is a 5.2L flat four.

40ohp at roughly 2,600rpm is not to shabby either.

This would make a great engine for a bush plane, with all the torque it must produce.

yeah all that was = to about what? a measly 160 hp iirc?, but no drivetrain loss :P

I'll never forget the first time I got to work on a forced induction piston pounder either, a PA44-180T, one of the rarest models of aircraft built and some stupid reason the FTU we did maintenance for decided this will be their new twin trainer because they used to run a naturally aspirated one before that , those POS (L)TO-360-E1A6Ds were such a bitch to get parts for when anything to do with the turbocharger system failed - hangar queen x 100, NEVER recommend anyone to buy the Turbo model one unless you have a spare serviceable one readily available to rob parts from. But to fly in one, totally different especially across the rockies, amazing machine to fly - absolute nightmare to maintain.

160hp in a 2,300lb plane got the job done, hehehe.
