Kinja'd!!!

Figured you guys would like to know this.

So I decided to look up some numbers on Top Fuel Dragsters, in response to the recent 5,000HP car I posted a bit ago.

Apparently, top fuel dragsters reach 8,000-10,000HP with ~6000lb*ft of torque. All in the layout of the old push-rod 426 Chrysler Hemi from '64-'71. While it is vastly different than those engines in many ways, that's still insane to think about.

So there ya go, apparently a V8 hemi is able to produce those batshit crazy numbers, and in a 500lb package, nonetheless! Holy shit.

Yes, yes, I'm sure some of you knew this. But for those who didn't realize those engines were quite that insane, now you do!

You're welcome! I read that page every year before I go to the O'Reilly Nationals, still never prepares me for the crying, burning throat, and general earthquake when those suckers launch.

Everyone should witness top fuelers at least once.

It's insane.

Top fuel drag racing is very underrated in my opinion. The smell of sweet, burning smell of nitro, the black, rubber-infused buggers, the kick in the chest and the way the sound distorts your vision are things you can't experience in any other racing. On top of all that, you can watch the teams do a complete rebuild in 35 minutes. Love it!

Yup. Seen that list yearly since '08.

You'd also be interested to know each pushrod weighs 2-3 pounds and is nearly 1/2-inch in diameter and completely solid. I have 10 sitting in my room, along with about a dozen valves and valve springs, and four blown up pistons. Good carnage just from normal runs, gotta love my job.

Thanks. Some of those facts I already knew, but some were new to me. Coolest one I learned?

* Nitromethane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases.

I agree. Even if drag racing (or any racing) isn't your thing, any gearhead will be mightily impressed.

It certainly is. There's nothing like it! And I have had the opportunity to have spectated since I before I was born, and two years ago got to participate in my dad's '97 Cobra. What an awesome time that was. Going through the pits also yields the makings for an awesome end table!

And I gather from your username that you are a Shelby fan, so I present to you the snake sleeping in my garage at home :P

Someone I know used to race sportsman class. Said top fuel was like 8 guys constantly firing 357 magnum pistols next to your ears....at idle.

I'd love to find out how much downforce Top Fuel cars get purely from the exhaust coming out of the pipes.

What do you do?

Either way, that's awesome. Interesting factoids man, I'd love to check out one of those engines up close.

Work at a motorsports facility.

Oh, and the whole torquing a crankshaft 20-degrees is more impressive when the crankshaft weighs ~80 pounds.

Funny thing is I don't agree with lots of things that a "Jalop" would like. I find my taste in cars to be more on par with someone from the '60s through '80s, more old school in a way. To me Miatas are lame, don't get why E30's are so big, and am really not a hypercar fan. But get anything form the '60s through early-'80s in front of me and I love it.

I feel that is the essence of being a jalop though, simply being interested in cars.

I'm similar, not a huge fan of the frs and not all wagons do it for me, etc.

Key things you didn't mention:

1. These motors are made entirely of billet steel.

2. They're completely rebuilt after ~4 passes.

3. The spark plugs are destroyed after 1 pass.

5000hp would never be possible in a street car, it is barely possible in a dragster.

Yeah, I mean this wasn't a complete informative essay on the motors. While true, their numbers are still very impressive and pretty crazy to think about despite their short life.

Thanks for the info though, I never even thought about the sparks.

You have very nice taste my friend! That was always a handsome color combo in my opinion.

That clutch plate brings back a memory from a few years ago at an NHRA event. My dad and I enjoy hanging in the pits and were watching Robert Hight's team tear down the car. One of the crew members took the clutch plates out one by one and laid them out in a line. Twenty minutes or so later, the plates were in the way and needed to be moved. The crew tried and tried, but couldn't move them. Those suckers were so hot when the crew member laid them down, that they baked themselves into the asphalt! They had to be removed with a chisel and sledge haha.

Why thank you! I was amazed at how that combo works on the car.

And that sounds just like what happened when I got that plate from the pits, the pulled them out steaming and sizzling to no end, laid them out on a oven mitt of some sort and let them sit for a solid half hour. I came back later to take a few and they were still very warm, and the dirtiest things I think I've ever seen come off a vehicle.
