That's not supposed to look like that.
Why would anyone cut the inside of a filler neck apart like that? NASCAR-quick fuel stops? I don't think it'll be an issue.
I did get most of the 1999 era gas out of it though. Now I gotta get the rest out, and pull the sending unit out, see what's what inside.

Weren't the leaded fuel nozzles larger than the unleaded ones? If I remember correctly that you could buy the cheaper leaded gas and knock out the center of fuel filler neck that was designed for unleaded. Emissions testing usually check this too.

Long time ago, when they still sold leaded as well as unleaded because many people thought that without lead, you would ruin valves and seats.

1972 I believe they quit using Leaded fuel in cars but it was sold at gas stations until 1995. I've seen that "modification" in many old cars.

I remember going fishing with my cousin back in the 90's, searching for a station that still sold leaded because his outboard needed it.
So it's kinda like putting E85 in cars today. People think because it's cheaper...

I think it was 1975. I know it wasn't 1972, our 72 LTD burned good ol' leaded fuel. My 75 Capri did not.

Somewhere around that time.

You're correct. But not all cars went to the restricted fuel nozzles at the same time. I had a '77 280Z that ran legal on leaded gas and had a full sized tank inlet.
